  • clips with alpha channel not transparent in FCP5

Posted by Jerome on July 3, 2005 at 12:24 pm

I’ve been making titles with After Effect, exported with Animation codec + Alpha channel. They used to appear transparent when imported in FCP 4.5.
Then i’ve made an upgrade of FCP to version 5.
Now i did exactly the same way for new titles, but i can not manage to have them transparent while importing them in FCP 5
    What’s the trick ??
Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hi Jerome

theres been a few threads on this recently … as far as I can tell its from a corrupt installation of FCP5.
also, the general opinion seems to be that ‘upgrade’ installs are to blame for pretty much most of the problems users have been seeing.

your best bet is a fresh install of FCP5 and try it again.

    best

The reinstallation of FCP5 seems like a dumb way to fix this since the whole application might be busted if it can’t handle alphas. I’d look lots of other places first like QT7.

Over on apple.com, a pi$$ed off FCP5 user got no alpha satisfaction after reinstalling (dunno if he really knew how to do that properly) so he is reverting to FCP4. Dunno if he knows how that will work with Tiger.

    HI,

We had a problem were we imported a clip with an animation codec (with alpha) and the viewer would show the alpha but would not work when it was in the timeline.

This clip worked in 4.5 so we compared all the bin columns to see if anything was different.

For our problem, we noticed the FIELD DOMINANCE column was different, so we changed it on the imported clip and voila our transparency in the timeline was back and working.

I am at home right now and can’t remember if we set it to NONE or NOT SET.

Hope this helps you as well.

    Regards

i just checked back in an old project and that was exactly the issue … FCP had seemingly misinterpreted the field dominance on import (in my case, interpreting a clip as upper field as opposed to lower). switching the field dominance back to lower (or in fact None or Not Set) and all was suddenly rosy in alpha channel land

my humble appologies to anyone who uinistalled/reinstalled FCP5 based on my advice. (i didn’t even do it myself).

however, there does seem to be some issue with files being misinterpreted on import … does anyone know why that is happening and/or could offer some advice on how to remedy this? the same files import/interpret just fine in FCP4.5.

cheers all, and thanks once more to Matt

Thanks a lot for all those answers. It now works properly on my G4 2x1Ghz/X.3.9/FCP5 … as long as i change the settings for my 200 clips with alpha one by one.
