My strongest recommendation would be to find a DV deck and dub your footage to a fresh tape. You lose nothing in the dub, it’s a simple file transfer. Then do your capturing using conventional techniques form the dub. The dub will have a clean timecode.
You can waste days, simply DAYS, trying to figure out FCP’s lame and confusing subclip and media management system. Save yourself from jumping into this particular fire till you have several more months working in the application. By that time, subclipping and renaming and media management will make more sense to you.

This could get really sticky so give yourself time to do some simple tests and test burns using a short clip.
I hope you get better advice so think twice about investing time in my approach!
Export a 1 minute segment of your your HD sequence from FCP as a short reference movie. Include some tricky audio, a transition, and some horizontal panning or fast action, if you can.
Open a new, standard DV sequence. Import your little movie. It must render, could take a long time so stick with very short clips to test the audio and transitions.
Take that to DVDSP in the usual way, don’t export to MPEG2, just import the movie directly into DVDSP and let DVDSP handle the encoding and burn your test.
AGAIN, let me repeat, this is just how I would approach this situation. Others may have a much more valid approach for you so you might want to wait for additional posts.

Just needs enough space.
Be sure ot read the fine print in the CCC manual for the difference between images and bootables. It’s confusing and could impact the success of your clone.bogiesan

I use all types of markers often but I never use Madia Manager.
Can you point me to this place in the manual where it says, “This is a cool feature but you can’t use it?”

Try starting up with the disk offline.
Then reset your scratch drive prefs to another drive or your Ssytem drive. Shut down.
Replug your LaCie.
Try it again. If it starts up, try resetting the scratch drive back to the LaCie.post back

October 11, 2005 at 3:03 pm in reply to: Mixing HDV & MiniDV on same timeline without rendering? Possible?[Zeeton] “I’m trying to edit HDV together with DigiBeta that’s been transferred to MiniDV for offline purposes. I need to mix them both on the same timeline, ideally without rendering. I tried HDV and DV NTSC timelines, and keep getting the orange bar, and it won’t let me play through without stopping.”
The CPU is set to handle the sequence settings, in your case, HDV, which is no picnic. HDV is a compressed format that requires interframes to be created by the CPU on the fly. Intense stuff. Anything other than HDV will require the CPU to run different processing routines, can’t do both at the same time, not yet.
But, (my own soapbox), I’m confused by the statement that you “must” use both formats in the same timeline. How would that help you in the end? If you are printing out to HDV, the other formats will all have to be converted sometime. What you want to do is convert your others to HDV before you bring them into the project. Time-consuming? Perhaps, but that’s the workaround. You wouldn’t try to intercut 16mm film with a DV project unless you had converted the film to tape and brought the tape into your DV editor. As far as I know, there is no glue yet on the market that will allow you to splice 16mm into DV tape.

[Eric Suquet] “I’ve been trying to batch re-catpture just the edited clips in the timeline, to no avail. “
This is the red flag for me in your description. Media Manager cannot possibly resolve this for you if you cannot easily recapture single clips. Something is terribly wrong with your file, not with MM, although, Media Manager is disgustingly poor code.
Sorry you have wasted so much time but this is all I can tell you: Stop chasing MM and EDLs, they are flawed non-solutions in FCP. Your only hope is to simply look at the in and out points for the clips and manually capture them and then manually replace them in your timeline since you cannot easily replace the source files (But you could try that. Print screen captures of the media folders and try to rename a fresh capture, see if you can force it relink.)
JMO: Media 100’s off-to-online was elegant and bombproof, FCP’s media handling is inexcusably lame. The inability to easily debug and cure media issues is a huge fault in FCP.

Not enough information. Was it working before? Before what? What have you done since?

Binary test. Try copying the media file to a another drive and reconnect to it. If it still hangs in the same place, your media file is bad. Is it a bad capture, a bad FW cable, a bad tape, or a bad drive? More binary tests.

October 10, 2005 at 3:38 pm in reply to: Need quick help Pls. can’t get file size correct using FlipForMac> I’m using FCP5 and installed FlipForMac. It imported the WMV file with no problem.< You mean you're using the Stdio version? the original version only imports QT and exports to wmv. > The WMV file is 320×240 which will be final. I want to set up the entire project for 320×240. Is there a way to do this with correct aspect ration in the viewer? < Yes. It's so easy I don't understand why you're asking. But then I'm assuming I understand your question whihc might not be true. > Also it seems I have to render all WMV files.. is there a way around that?< If you are importing wmv and exporting wmv, you don't need Flip4Mac. Aside from that, of course you have to process every pixel and every audio sample because you're moving between codecs. It's not called rendering, This is transcoding. The documentation that comes with Flip4Mac's products is thorough. if you're having trouble figuring it out, contact the company. bogiesan This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”
