Blowing the FW boards is far easier than most folks realize. The six-pin plug is easily reversed sending current down the data bus wires and that instantly pops the FW chip on one or even both ends of the connection.
It’s even worse in dark edit rooms or installations where the FW is only on the back of a difficult to reach computer.
The front panel connectors on the G5s aren’t all that much better since you can still eaisly insert the plug inverted. We have FW hubs on our G5s.
It won’t matter what you tell your people, they will only plug and unplug FW their way and if anything goes wrong, they’ll find a way to blame anyone or anything.

My experience contradicts yours, sorry. From where I’m sitting, I can’t help you determine where you are getting the processing hit.
My old dual 2.7 G5s (10.4.6/FCP5.1) don’t scream when compared to the new Macbooks but they are a huge improvement over our previous hardware. We did not feel FCP5 was in the least bit slower than 4.5. Our recent updates to 5.1 did not appear to contribute significantly to the user experience.bogiesan

Unfortunately, AVI is not sufficient information. There were literally hundreds of codecs for the AVI wrapper and only a few, less than a dozen, were ever available for the Macintosh. It’s a deadend convention, not even Microsoft actively support it anymore. What you want to do is insist your clients abandon their old fashioned ways and gracefully enter the 21st Century already. Convert their ancient files or replace their ancient applications with modern tools.
It’s rather like saying, “I have an IMAX editing system but my client has some Super8 they want me to assemble. It’s just film, right? Should work, right?”

If you need portable, buy the Macbook.
If you need expansion capabilities but can’t wait, buy the G5 desktop.
If you need expansion but can wait, wait for the new desktop Intel units. By merely extrapolating from the Macbook’s performance, the new Intels are going to be remarkable machines.
Anyone stuck with a less-than-2-year-old G5 is going to be very upset when these new machines ship!bogiesan

Since you could not afford to make these decisions before you went into shooting, work with what you shot. Adopt the style of the footage. Strive to tell your story and forget trying to make it look it like a competent crew shot it with matched cameras.

Shatter patterns must conform to some pretty weird standards, I haven’t used anything except simple text since Shatter was new from Atomic, jsut haven’t needed to do anything custom with patterns, sorry.

Playing with fire is a bad idea. Managing a load is only part of the issue. Do you have adequate supply? Do you need more wall outlets instead of more outlet strips? Are the cords adequately gauged for your load/distance/resistance? Does your service panel have modern breakers? Do you really need some filtering and power smoothing?
Do you have a smoke alarm and electrical fire extinguisher in your facility?Hiring a good electrician to install adequate power delivery and modern circuit protection is easier and cheaper than rebuilding your facility after a fire.
