[Tielman Dewaele] “I know im not realy in the right forum…but here it go’s: “

True, you should be posting in Canon video camera forums.

Take the HD. “No budget” means making the most with what you got. Get the camera, learn how to make it work for you and don’t look back. You will be very glad you have HD footage.

Or shoot with the XL/DV if you simply cannot cope with the HD’s automatics. Decision is yours.

Could also be a field interpolation issue at their end.
You may just need a slight bit of vertical blur or motion blur.
Creating credit roles for external clients is difficult unless you and their engineer/geek can communicate precisely about frame rates.

After Effects creates exquisite moving text, always has. The problems we see here are almost always easily cured by talking over the specific settings for the project’s output file.

“Realistic” is totally subjective and, in this case, depends on what substances, within your project’s context, created the explosion or are oxidizing. If it’s just gunpowder, the original would have been more accurate, white and gray. Gasoline burns intensely orange and yellow if there’s plenty of oxygen or another accelerant at play. Conventional weapon payload explosions are instantaneous flashes with smoke.

If it’s a thermonuclear explosion that takes out a planet, you need purple. If it’s a deathray weapon from the Alpha Centaurus region, you need green highlights to accurately reflect their well known and deeply feared mass-to-energy conversion weaponry systems. If your aliens are from the Romulan quadrant, planet-killers tend to be pink with a hot blue shockwave but their ship-to-ship weapons are invisible and the resulting explosions depend solely on what the unfortunate target was made of.

What do you WANT it to look like?

Are you trying to do this After Effects?
Open the manual and do the tutorials that come with the application, should take you a few weeks to get up and running if you’re patient.
    Visit the AE Basics forum.

December 31, 2008 at 7:49 pm in reply to: Playstation 3 Ad

Applying the building textures to the movies is a simple Displacement Map and motion tracking the buildings isn’t particularly difficult, either but, sheesh, there’s nothing simple about the application of any of this stuff in those ads. Looks like the modeling was done in a very good 3D application. the t-shirt spot probably used 3D motion capture. If you look very carefully, it appears many of the individuals were composited into the shot, they weren’t all shot at once.

If you wait around a couple more weeks and keep researching the spots on the Playstation fan sites, someone will soon connect with the effects house and post some interviews with the artists. If you stick with it, please come back and let us know what you find.

Yes, but try Colorama or Tint (or TriTone) first.
If you visit Dean Valez’s site, theanvel.com, you’ll see many fire and pyro effects he created using only Fractal Noise and Tint.

Back in the 60s, probably done “on twos” at 12 frames/second.

[Dave LaRonde] “Um, cel animation at 18 frames a second for the Charlie Brown specials?”

Mark, your local library will have several books on film animation history and techniques. One of my favorites in from Disney, “The Illusion of Life.” More about the artists than techniques, though.

December 31, 2008 at 7:28 pm in reply to: How to get 25i from 50p in AE

In the olden days before many 3D apps could render fields, we produced scenes that were twice as long. We would interpret the clip at twice the frame rate and, when dropped into a field-interpreted project, AE magically separated the frames and combined them into fields.

Your workflow description makes no sense to me at all. Far too many steps, way too complicated.

And I’m here to say thanks to Dave LaRonde for having the patience to try to get you to explain what you needed.

December 31, 2008 at 7:03 pm in reply to: Electricity Sound FX

Electricity itself makes no sound at all but electrical energy can invoke harmonics in the materials it is passing through or being used to excite. CFLs and fluorescent lights hum but incandescant bulbs shouldn’t make any noise at all unless they are on a dimmer and then you may hear the filaments sing as the wires vibrate. It’s easy to record 60Hz humming from many electrical devices.

No clue. Is it exactly the same in every frame? What format are your hirez stills?
