    Hello,
I know im not realy in the right forum…but here it go’s:

    I need some advice:

In march we are making a VERY low-budget docufilm in India, about a social projects and surfing thats been going on for a couple of years

I sold my camera a while a go, so we are looking for a nice handy camera.
We have to shoot the projects, surfing, interviews etc..

At the end i will edit it for a dvd and a preview on belgium mtv network.

One of our sponsers(magazine) has a sponser by Canon for still cameras. Canon have giving them a canon hf 10 Hd videocamera.
So we can use that one. The quality is pretty good, as it is full HD, but the manual functions and audio options are zero.
The other option is a Canon Xl2, who has more option then the one HF10, but it is mDV.
Im a bit unsure what to do.
There is no budget for a better shouldercamera(HD, digibeta…)
We have to buy a micro as well for interviews.

Who has used this handycam camera? What can i do with it…

True, you should be posting in Canon video camera forums.

Take the HD. “No budget” means making the most with what you got. Get the camera, learn how to make it work for you and don’t look back. You will be very glad you have HD footage.

Or shoot with the XL/DV if you simply cannot cope with the HD’s automatics. Decision is yours.

Go with the XL2. The audio capabilities alone are enough to make the difference. With a severely constrained budget, the best thing you can do for yourself is capture good audio. Mediocre images are tolerable, unintelligible audio is hard to overcome. Put together a kit with a few different microphones, windscreens, a cheap boom, mic stand and a good pair of closed headphones.

I’ll assume you are working in PAL. PAL DV makes a much better picture than NTSC, something many of the contributors to this forum don’t get to experience. This camera also has true widescreen chips so you can go 16 by 9 without sacrificing quality. Get a filter kit for the surfing. A polarizing filter and maybe an ND grad will make a big difference. Bring a tripod as you will probably push to the end of the zoom plus it keeps your camera out of the sand and water in between takes.

Tape is still the king of convenience and reliability, especially in the field. Dealing with the file based format of the HF10 could be troublesome with a limited crew and resources.

    Well, there you go.

I’m assuming your audio resources are no better than anything else; no audio guy, no boom, no wireless, no headphones, no lavs, no shotguns, no tripod, no filters, no nothing.

    Shoot HD.

Canon do make a shotgun mike which works with the HF-10 (see https://www.camcorderinfo.com/content/Canon-Vixia-HF10-Camcorder-Review-34711/Audio–Playback–Connectivity.htm) for a pic and the mike levels are adjustable (although it is likely fiddly, it is doable). Or better, get a Rode VideoMic rather than the Canon.

Haven’t yet done it myself but apparently FCP logs AVCHD into ProRes 422 quite happily.

You will have to have enough flash to cover a day’s shooting and also a strategy to transfer the flash content to disk at the end of day.
