It is a game changer for AE, but not a replacement for a 3d program.
Animating with it is incredibly tedious… As a c4d user, i’ll only use it for text when I am not being paid for 3d animation. -
It’s always going to be easier to fine-tune in After effects around your 3D Scene. depending on the interaction I would start in cinema and end in After effects.
Honestly I would think of how to simplify the action, potentially making your 3D objects stills with an alpha channel and animating them with the characters in AE.
Cinema is an AWESOME TOOL but sometimes, (especially for projects similar to this) after effects is just easier.

Apparently I’m not on my game today. The timeline was in the negatives. You can’t set a keyframe when not within your timeline range.

I don’t know that you are going to find a tutorial on it. I recently had to do the same thing and I proceeded as follows…
1. I took 8 Screen shots of one page down scrolls on a feed.
2. Took all images and combined them in photoshop in a large tall document…I Animated the position in after effects of the scroll, and replaced a picture with a youtube looking video that was linked to the scrolling photoshop file. I animated a curser in AE to click on it, and zoomed into the location of the video.

Simple answer is yes… you have to change it to cloning on the surface…
But from experience, to get the effect you are looking for you may have to break it down and put a selection tag on R1 (the front face).

I’m not sure I understand why a compositing tag on the face of the phone with an object buffer does not work?

Recently had to create a skateboard helmet and used alpha. Thanks for the clear and precise way to actually achieve the desired result!
