    Thanks Tim,

Excellent primer and I will create the backups in this manner now. If I run into any hitches I will let you know.

Many thanks for the detailed response.

Try taking it into Resolve, then have some nice softening tools in there that will get the edge off.

IN FCP X use .02 value to soften the image a bit. Work in small fractions instead of with the slider. a .02 pixel blur is often used to soften digital photography.

If you are printing the stills then you might also want to change the resolution from 72DPI to 300DPI in photoshop.

  • Enough people have lectured you in this thread about re-shooting which you have stated you can not.

This might be the best way to deal with the problem.

Perhaps you can try to put a soft mask on the image and sharpen only the face to the point where it is acceptable and then leave the background where it is.

You can do this easily in Resolve and adjust the softening sharpening parameters. Sharpen the inside a little (the face) and soften the outside more (the background) to create more of a separation.

Use a couple of nodes to achieve this effect.

August 8, 2013 at 7:38 am in reply to: Using the Prores Proxy media imported

[Oliver Peters] “I’m cutting a film shot on RED and have found the whole FCP X RED R3D/proxy workflow to be a bit problematic. There seems to be a conflict with the RED Rocket card (others have posted this, too, at RedUser). “

I have had no problems at all on a machine that DOES NOT have a rocket installed. So it could very well be the way the rocket is interacting with FCP X or vice versa. That said, it is a fairly fast render and when done this way the workflow is silky smooth.

You might also want to confirm your sequence settings. THe reason it is smooth in FCP X is probably because you are only seeing one field of teh information in the viewer.

You could use a deinterlace filter or have FCP convert the sequence to a progressive format.

    This is so easy.

If you need a 5K delivery, edit everything in 5K

When you are sone duplicate the sequence.

Change the sequence settings to 1920×1080, FCP X does the rest for you.

    Export a 1920x 1080 from that sequence and a 5K from the 5K sequence.

    It’s really that simple.

I would suggest the following (and I do it all the time)

    – IMport r3d files.
    – Create proxy media
    – set editing preferences to PROXY (low resolution, ETC
    – EDIT
    – When you are completely done, set the preferences to HIGH QUALITY MEDIA and HIGH PLAYBACK and FCP will read and render from the R3D so you will get the very best quality on render out.

You can create a custom preset in your project menu with that frame size.

    Ah.

I have not seen this. When a role is assigned it should stick.
