    Gary,

Are you saying that the footage can not be cross converted by the KONA or that it can not be transcoded from DVCPRO HD 1080P to DVCPRO HD 720P. With this method there would be no downconversion of TC as the original and the transcoded would both be at 23.98.

By posting that site I was not trying to suggest any particular reseller. I was simply pointing to a page with the product on it. That is CDN pricing. IN the future I will post directly to the manufacturers page.

    Pete,

maybe this is a short term long term solution.

How about this. Capture it all at 1080i as AJA suggests and then when the project is captured add the following steps.

Select the entire project and media and use media manager to transcode all of the footage into a 720P project with the HD 720P 23.98 setup. This will cut all of your storage in half. Once you ahve media managed and recompressed all of the footage, just delete your 1080P captured footage and use the AjA easy setups for the 720P 23.98 DVCPRO HD. All of the 23.98TC fromthe 1080P material will be preserved in the transcoding and you are doing it at the front end before you make any edits.

The only drawback is that you will need 1.5x the storage to execute it in this way. If you do a few tests this might be the easiest way to go. It didn’t dawn on me tha that the KONA 2 can not downconvert between HD formats on the fly, duh?

  • Bob,

I hear you. Like Apeture isn’t a huge kick inthe head to Adobe and photoshop. That is a direct move into the Pro Photographer market with many, many powerful tools. They did the same with DVD SP too. And What choice does Adobe have but to keep making their software.

    Jonestown.

    i am curious,

How exactly do we put the pressure on Apple? Besides sending user feedback.

  • Keep in mind that there are no PCI X or PCI slots in teh new quad. What does that mean? Well. None of your old PCI cards will go into the new machine, so this means that your atto or SATA card or Firewire card, or USB card is only good on your older G5’s (wait did I just say older G5’s).

Anyhow. Taking the plunge into dual core will mean all new Hardware from teh ground up. NOt even one measy PCI slot in these new babies.

Read about how to do this as well.

THe POA cache and MOA cache are caches created by FCP. The POA can be deleted and is recreated teh next time you start FCP. Of course it will be a fresh cache once you ahve deleted and restart. Sometimes it is at the root of some FCP cache issues.

    Walter,

We were all spoiled by Avid and Media 100’s ability to utilize these PRO features. NObody ever expected FCP (the new kid on the block) to be so weak at managing media.

For freeze frames. Take the time to export them as pict files and reimport them and cut them back in. Make this part of your workflow and you can avoid the freeze frame issues. For speed. I think that the constant speed clips are fine, but the ramping clips are at the heart of the problem.

The real problem is that none of the media management in FCP ever assumes that you might want to recapture and this was a bad design from the onset. The language of the MM is cumbersome, because it uses words like “delete” media when you actually are not deleting media. we are all used to the term handles.

The best thing to do is have the offline editors create the online sequences when the media is online, or maybe we should all be using XML a lot more to move projects rather than opening the project files with no media attached.

It’s not seemless, but a few of these workarounds might help. I wish tehy would spend a bit of time at these “core” “pro”issues rather than giving us more gizmo and flash. We know it’s great software, let’s make it better Apple.

October 26, 2005 at 8:09 pm in reply to: closed captioning

The best way to do it is to play it out of your KOONA 2 to an NTSC monitor that has an option to turn on closed captioning. If the captioning is on the tape then it has also been digitized.

    I am talking SD here.

On any standard household set. I have a SONY trinitron for this reference, turn on the closed captioning and play the tape or play the media out of the KONA to this monitor and you should see the captioning.
