I’m offlining a short film that was recorded 23.98psf on a Panasized Sony F900. ( The Primo zooms and primes by the way look fantastic). I’m trying to figure out my picture workflow. I have a Kona 2 withe the layest drivers and you can see my other stats below. I’ll becoming out of the back of the HDW-F500 Cine alta at 23.98psf HD SDI into the primary input on the Kona 2. My intial thought was to use the DVCPro HD 720p 23.98 dvcpro HD codec, which I think is around 5.7 megs a second. I feel I could handle that for the amount of storage I have for the project. But it turns out that according to AJA support I can only use the 1080 23.98psf DvcPro HD codec. I got that to work all right but at 11.3 megs a second it’s a little steep for my storage requirements for nthe amount of footage I have. According to AJA I can down convert to 525i29.97 out to my sdi monitor once the 1080 23.98psf i Dvc pro HD footage is in, but I can’t transcode the 1080p to 720p at the time of capture. Is this really the case or am I missing something here. What is everybody else using to offline HD Cam at 23.98? I mean the obvious thing to do is do the down conversion at the deck to 525i 29.97 and then just capture dv or something. but then i’ll have pulldowns and my edl won’t be accurate to the frame when I later converet it to do the online in the Inferno. What ever happen to Qrez? Fortunately I have lots of time and want to figure out a good offline workflow. Any Thought would greatly be appreciated.

    Cheers

    Pete,

maybe this is a short term long term solution.

How about this. Capture it all at 1080i as AJA suggests and then when the project is captured add the following steps.

Select the entire project and media and use media manager to transcode all of the footage into a 720P project with the HD 720P 23.98 setup. This will cut all of your storage in half. Once you ahve media managed and recompressed all of the footage, just delete your 1080P captured footage and use the AjA easy setups for the 720P 23.98 DVCPRO HD. All of the 23.98TC fromthe 1080P material will be preserved in the transcoding and you are doing it at the front end before you make any edits.

The only drawback is that you will need 1.5x the storage to execute it in this way. If you do a few tests this might be the easiest way to go. It didn’t dawn on me tha that the KONA 2 can not downconvert between HD formats on the fly, duh?

no you cannot cross convert the footage, I just use the 1080 version of DVCProHD at 24 (23.98)
On my DP2,5 the footage plays fine from a FW 800 drive, but I find that playing back from an array offers more RT, and thereby a faster edit.

For off-lining in NTSC I use the master tapes and dig direct to photo jpeg or DV50 at 24p, by doing this is with hardware I get a more accurate edit and better offline TC without corruption (that happens with a software transcode between footage of different timebases)

Q-Rez died a long time ago, thank you DVCProHD.

Unfortunately there is no firewire out ont theHDW F500 Hd Cam deck. Would I be able to do this with the JH3 player only deck?

    Gary,

Are you saying that the footage can not be cross converted by the KONA or that it can not be transcoded from DVCPRO HD 1080P to DVCPRO HD 720P. With this method there would be no downconversion of TC as the original and the transcoded would both be at 23.98.

The K2 is not capable of cross converting the frame size between 1080 to 720 at any frame rate or compression setting.
I also never recommend using compressor for conversions – IMHO it has never worked well enough for my needs.

I was suggesting the use of MM to create the new project.

Gary if we can not transcode how can I do this through the Kona 2 to dv 50 24p. It only uses firewire.

    Cheers

    Pete,

The Kona will do the downcoversion to DVCpro50 on the fly.
