Try refresh AV devices in the view menu or you can go in and manually set it in the AV devices tab of audio video settings or in the
View menu>video playback>Firewire
Try those three things.

1. Is the new internal drive fast enough for DV, HDV, SD, and HD?

2. Is making a software RAID configuration between the 2 500GB internal drives beneficial?
No, you should never run the software and the media onteh same drive.
Will it enhance the video performance?

3. What benefits would external drives (price comparable) serve over this – if any? Is SATA connection necessary or can Firewire 800 cut it?
You are best to go wth a SATA raid. With that you will get SD but not HD speeds. and expandable cheap fast storage. (it is not protected though. For DV, SD you can also go with a firewire 800 raid.

Try this to see if there is an overhead issue
Question: How can I Test RAID performance?
Answer: Here’s how to test your RAID with a real clip:
1) Set up your project with a KONA 2 easy setup (typefor easy setup menu; make sure the “show all checkbox” is checked).
2) Create a new sequence (). A new sequence will appear in the FCP browser.
3) In the FCP browser, double-click on the sequence; the new sequence will appear in the FCP timeline window.
4) Click on the Effects (tab) in the FCP browser.
5) Go to the Video Generators folder, and drag the appropriate Bars and Tone effect onto the new sequence.
6) Go to the Video Filters -> Video folder and drag the Timecode Generator Effect onto the video track of the new sequence (burned in timecode).
7) From the FCP menu bar, go to FILE -> EXPORT -> QUICKTIME MOVIE.
8) Give it a name and make sure the rendered clip is stored on the RAID.
9) From the FCP menu bar, go to FILE -> IMPORT, and select the clip that you exported in step 8.
10) Create a new sequence and drag the bars and tone clip onto the new sequence.
11) Hold Down the -

When using print to video you need to hit play and record on the camera yourself. What you should do is open teh sequence you want.
Activate the print to video
When it tells you to hit play record on the PD170,
you should do that in the Camera’s VTR menuYou will see a red record light on the LCD of the PD170
Click OK in FCP to start the program recording.
Check your tape.

That is a very loaded question but I would say that if you want to keep it looking like the original then I would stay in the DV format. You can capture it directly to the DV codec and then output it back to tape in the DV codec.
This way is lossless.

I think that the way to go is to go to Tiger 10.4.2 NOT 10.4.3 yet and the driver is the latest 1.1.4.
Many people have gone to QT 7.0.3 and FCP 5.0.2 But I have seen posts in the FCP forum that suggest that 10.4.3 is not playing well with FCP 5.0.3
I have stayed with the 10.4.2 FCP 5.0.2 and KONA 2 1.1.4 combo becasuse it has been so stable.
