Well, those folders need to reside on the root of the hard drive. Assuming Avid can see the hard drive as a media drive option (check your media creation settings to make sure it’s not filtered out) it will make an OMFI MediaFiles folder and Avid MediaFiles folder. Replace those with your older ones, open MC and it should scan the drives and see all the media.

  • To check if your new sequence is indeed using MXF media, open a new bin set to text view and drop the seq into it. Set the bin to show reference clips, and turn on the heading for media file format or media type. This should show either OMF or MXF and you’ll have your answer.
I suppose then you could delete the omf media and clear up some space.

  • Same steps as above, but I’ve always used the 10-fr and 1-fr keys 1,2,3,4 on the alpha keyboard.

You have the version of Xpress DV that doesn’t require a dongle – just your serial number i believe. Avid no longer sells this software, as well as Xpress Pro. There is an upgrade path first to Xpress Pro ($495) then from Xpress Pro to MC (another $495 or $395 if you don’t want the books and the third party software.
Check the online store for upgrades.

June 16, 2008 at 3:02 pm in reply to: jaggys on text for avid from tiff

Assuming your text lines look jaggy during playback (not while paused), on your broadcast monitor (not your computer screen) then it’s possible your creation and import settings aren’t the same. But with your PSD sized to 1920×1080, I’m assuming you’re working in a 1080i project. In the import settings, it’s the top of the four choices (not at composer right now) you should use for graphics that are made the same size as your project. The other three will affect the size of the graphic, and could introduce jagged diagonal lines. Another thing to consider is the little timeline quality box at the lower left of the timeline window. If it’s not full green, the graphics wont look as good as they can. If it’s at yellow/green, click it until it’s fully green. For your workflow, I can also recommend a time-saver. Instead of saving out TIFF files from your PSD, then reopening them to create an alpha channel and resaving before import to Avid, try PNG. PNG files save with transparency information, and will import into Avid beautifully. Turn on the layers you want in your PSD, effects, masks, transparency, whatever. Get it to look how it should and save out a PNG (non-interlaced is what I use). Then import that directly into the Avid. You may need to test out the invert / use existing switch to see what works best.

    Good Luck!

Shane, a huge annoyance to me as well. I’ve had to slow myself down (keyboard-intensive user from the linear days) to run FCP – even on a new 8-core Mac. However, when using Xpress Pro on my G4s i have no such sluggishness. My keystrokes are not ignored, I don’t end up losing half my sequence because the computer got my in point but not the out point and hitting DELETE got rid of everything to the right of the in point…ARRGGH!!!

    But I digress.

Here’s kind of a basic suggestion, excuse me if you find it too basic, but just trying to be helpful. Is monitoring enabled for the clips in question? It’s the litlle square box just to the left of the V1 track button when you load a source clip. I’ve found that the clip monitor state is remembered so that it was off before it’ll be off the next time the clip is loaded. If you subclip the dark clips you’re essentially creating new clips with new monitor states set to ON by default, so that may explain why the subclips are visible when the originals are not.

    Just a hunch. Good Luck!

I haven’t had my hands inside an Avid since 2003 or so, but here’s some rusty free info:
If you have the PCI extender, chances are you already have the Avid cards in the extender. IIRC, the cards are the Avid DMB (digital media board) which has two connectors that look like the SCSI ones parallel to each other one marked M the other marked C (connect the BOB to the M); and the EDC card which has two db9 or vga connectors on it, covered with black plugs on most systems I’ve worked with. You’ll also have your Avid monitor card, for your edit side monitor, which connects to the DMB internally with a ribbon cable.
The card and cable you REALLY need to connect to the G4 is the PCI Extender card & cable. The plug on the card is pretty wide as is the thick ribbon cable that goes to the PCI Externder box.
Also, IIRC the ATTO Ultra SCSI card should go in the G4 directly – look on Avid’s site or inside the G4 for which PCI slot to put which card in.

    Good Luck!

btw, if you set your clip color to source under the timeline fast menu, any coloring of low res clips you do in the bin will show in the timeline. I keep mine set this way as well as to offline to give a quick visual of offline clips in the sequence.

Sure. Under the fast menu (many call it the hamburger menu) at the lower left of the timeline window you’ll find many options for display. I think what you’re looking for is under show clip data.

Also, another way I think may help you is to create a new bin, copy your sequence to it, and under the fast menu select Bin Display. Then select Show Reference Clips. This will fill the bin with all elements actually used in the sequence.
