Your problem is not hardware related, since you stated the computer ran fine when you first started using it.

It probably has to do with some type of software you have installed, post-build. Or an update to an already installed program (ie- antivirus update).

I’d uninstall any newly installed programs and try again. You might just have to reinstall Windows and start clean.

Or– you have something that’s gone bad, like a RAM module. However, this is highly unlikely.

When you plug your camera into your computer (make sure the camera is powered on), your computer should make a little ‘bong’ sound (or some other type of little sound), and you should see an icon pop on in the system tray (by the clock). If this is not happening, then your computer is not seeing the camera (ie- the drivers to communicate between the two aren’t working properly).

If the system isn’t seeing the camera, do you have a different Firewire device you can try, as a test? Just to see if the computer recognizes the device. You also might want to check your Device Manager and make sure the Firewire port is showing up and doesn’t have a yellow triangle on it (which means it doesn’t have a working driver).

If it comes down to a driver issue, you’ll probably have to do a Google search for the appropriate driver for your computer & operating system.

Turning off unused processes do not turn themselves back on when you restart the computer. If they are done by the method I outlined, they do not auto-start when the computer boots up. I have had users tell me that they computers were significantly faster by disabling the startup items. You’d be surprised at how many of these things ‘plant’ themselves in the system configuration menu. I’ve personally worked on systems that had over 30 services that started when the computer booted. These systems would sometimes take over 30 seconds to fully boot to the desktop (to the point where the hard drive is no longer active). After disabling these the computer would fully boot up in about 10-12 seconds. My personal system boots up completely in under 5 seconds, after it leaves the BIOS splash screen.

You can also run services.msc and ‘disable’ any service that you do not want running. It will stay disabled when the computer boots up.

Obviously Pioneer drives are always excellent quality. Go to Windows ‘Start’ prompt, type: MSCONFIG
When the system configuration window opens, click the ‘Startup’ tab.
UNCHECK everything that has a checkmark EXCEPT your antivirus/security software. Click ‘Apply’, then ‘OK’. Reboot.

If you had many items that had checkmarks, your computer should boot faster and run faster as well.

I’ve been editing AVCHD files for quite a few years. Started out with Vegas Pro 8 on an old Intel dual-core CPU with integrated GPU. No problems editing. Then switched to an Intel i3 laptop, again no problems editing AVCHD. The only problem I ever encountered was when I moved to the i3 laptop, and it was due to only having 4gb RAM (Vegas would crash). Upgraded to 8gb RAM and crashing went away.

Thomas- try this:
Go to your Windows ‘Run’ prompt and type: msconfig
The Windows System Configuration window should appear. Click the ‘Startup’ tab.
Uncheck EVERYTHING that has a checkmark EXCEPT your anti-virus/security software.
Click ‘Apply’ and then click ‘OK’. It should ask you to reboot the system.
Once your system boots back up, launch Vegas and see if it works without crashing.

Very weird…..StackHash isn’t synonymous with Vegas, since that error can appear when other applications crash.

I use the MainConcept video for internet 1080 option, and under the video tab I always crank up the average and maximum bit rates, as well as enable ‘two-pass’. My footage always comes out looking great, and not too far off the original AVCHD 24 Mbps clips.

If the software is crashing, see what the Event Viewer is reporting. The Event Viewer is part of the Windows operating system. This will give explicit information that will allow you to pinpoint your problem.

If it’s happening on every system, a good place to start is looking at other installed software. Quite possibly there is another program that is conflicting with Vegas. I’ve seen instances (not Vegas specific) where one program would install a new single .dll file and would make another program on the system behave erratically.
