Activity Forums VEGAS Pro Sony Vegas Never responding

  • Sony Vegas Never responding

Posted by Thomas Jørgensen on February 23, 2014 at 7:26 pm

greetings! Been reading this forum for some years now and seen many threads concerning the “not responding” issue for different reasons. However, I can’t help but draw the conclusion that this software is just very badly optimized and has a terrible workflow, regardless of system specs, OS or file formats. I am hoping someone can prove me wrong. I have been usin Sony Vegas for years, from version 6 all the way to the recent Pro 12 64bit version, and i am beginning to lose hope.

I started a new thread because most of the other issues was unrelated or the solution did not work.

During this time i have used 3 different computers, i recently bought a more powerfull one with video editing in mind. It’s way ahead of the system recomendations, and still, i have workflow issues and constant crashes. even with clean install. It usually happens every 5 minutes, sometimes before i can even play a clip after opening a project. especially if the project is over 10 minutes long.

    What i have tried:

    Version 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12.
Windows XP, VISTA, 7 (32 AND 64 bit)
    reinstalled every Windows version.
    Reinstalled vegas countless times
    rebooted
tried different formats: AVI,MP4,MPEG,MOV and so on.
Played back in draft quarter quality to full HD.
changed from thumbnail to list view
installed different codecs (on previous computer, not the present one)
enabled GPU boost options in preferances
and a lot of other things.

What’s weird is that i have had this problem on every computer, it does not seem to make a differance. It cant be a virus, bad version or corupt file i am using.

    Current Specs:

    OS: Win 7 Ultimate (64bit)
    Prosessor: Intel Core i7-3770K CPU @ 3.50GHz
    RAM: Corsair XMS3 1600MHz 16 GB
GPU: 2x NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670
HD: Corsair SSD Force Series 3 240GB
    Motherboard: ASUS Sabertooth Z77

It crashes as i mentioned every 5 min or so while editing (i get the loading wheel and not responding in the corner, then it turns white and i get not responding) And it happens frequently when i try to just play the video (even with no effects and low quality playback) nothing happens, and if i try to click anywhere it crashes. It Also crashes during rendering when im lucky enough to get to that stage.

I’m sorry for making this post so long, but it is driving me MAD. I really hope someone is able to help me with this, I’m sure other people have issues like this as well. Please tel me if more information is requierd.

I haven’t the foggiest idea. Have you tried using Premiere? Or AVID? I’ve gotta ask. Why have you persevered with Vegas after all these years?

I bought the Adobe Creative cloud bundle, but i have a lot to learn when it comes to after effects and premiere. There is something i just love about vegas pro. It’s so easy to use (when it works) and the layout and user interface just feels right. I love using it to just edit down and make a final cut of my movies, but when it crashes it takes so much extra time. I Guess i’m just having a hard time letting go of everything i have learned and start all over with a different program.
And i kept saying to myself, this has to be a issue with my computer, but after reciving my new PC and the crashes kept comming, I’m starting to give up.. 🙁 I wish one of the developers came knocking on the door, sat down and tried to figure out what is causing the problem. Maybe I’m just cursed.

Im not here to convince anyone to use Sony Vegas instead of another
NLE. You obviously are well experienced in using Vegas and knows of
its benefits over the competitions. So at this point there is nothing
new anyone can tell you, and the decision to go over to Premiere or
another NLE that works flawlessly for

I’m not saying i know everything about Sony Vegas. I would say i know how to get what i wan’t to achieve editing wise, but when it comes to more technical aspecs and bugs ect, I’m not that trained, i always figured it was something wrong with my PC. But I’m hopefull and open to any sugestions i haven’t tried that might solve the problem. I’ve never really tweaked the preferances that much, and I’m not sure how to optimize the software to get the ideal preformance to my new specs. You guys seem way ahead of me on that aspect wchich is why I am turning to you. And i apreciate youre response so far.

Have you used resmon to see what Vegas is waiting for?

If the software is crashing, see what the Event Viewer is reporting. The Event Viewer is part of the Windows operating system. This will give explicit information that will allow you to pinpoint your problem.

If it’s happening on every system, a good place to start is looking at other installed software. Quite possibly there is another program that is conflicting with Vegas. I’ve seen instances (not Vegas specific) where one program would install a new single .dll file and would make another program on the system behave erratically.

Thank you for the tip Steve. I Can’t say i have tried resmon before. I did a quick google search on it and managed to run it paralell with vegas pro, this time the project crashed even before it loaded all the tracks. But resmon did not elaborate that much other than showning in red “not responding” under PID it said “7108” right click and analyse showed nothing, then i right clicked and tried search internett, but it just googled “vegas120.exe” I can keep trying different things and wait for vegas to get the loading wheel before not responding to se if it gives me a different message. Am i doing this correctly, or is there some other procedure in resmon i should try when it does’nt respond?

    Hi Dave.

I gave the event viewer a try, and it shows all the instances where Vegas crashes. The report gave me a list of numbers and letters, i will do my best at translating them as i don’t have Windows installed in English.

    Description
Path to program with error: C:\Program Files\Sony\Vegas Pro 12.0\vegas120.exe

    Problem signature
    Problem event name: APPCRASH
    Program name: vegas120.exe
    Program versjon: 12.0.0.394
    Timestamp for program: 5086cf03
    Error module name: StackHash_cb76
    Error module version: 6.1.7601.18247
    Timestamp for errormodule:521eaf24
    Exemption Code: c0000374
    Exeption Offset: 00000000000c4102
    OS-versjon: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.256.1
    ID for national setting: 1044
    additional information 1: cb76
    additional information 2: cb760c577a73af58d50f8290871876eb
    additional information 3: b215
    additional information 4: b215f29f7002df36dd5d8ad9027e9d1e

Now the question remains what to make of these numbers. I tried the obvious which was to search for solutions via windows. It just said you will be informed when a solution to the problem is found. Another software dll file could be plausible, but that sounds like a dificult task to try and find out. But thank you for the response 🙂

    You used this process, right?
Go to Start, Run, and enter resmon
In the Overview tab, look for the program in the image column.
Right-click on the program image name and select “Analyze Wait Chain”
If a process is the problem, you can try to simply end the process. More often than not (in my experience) this usually fixes the immediate problem and the program can continue running. Back up your work and Google the offending process to see if there may be a fix. (It’s a long shot, though.)

Very weird…..StackHash isn’t synonymous with Vegas, since that error can appear when other applications crash.
