[bogiesan] “But the output requires a second filter such as Caustics to make the effect visible.”
Wave World + Caustics = headache of a render… although it does look pretty =)
I like to pre-render a Wave World comp, then use it for a Displacement effect on an Adjustment layer and set its blending mode to something like soft light or overlay.

[phill_r] “Especially when the camera flies by an image, there’s a slight blurry-repetition that occurs.”
Do you want something in addition to Motion Blur? You can play with the Motion Blur settings in the Composition settings (cmd-K/ctrl-K). In CS3 you can even set a number of samples, fewer would result in more obvious stepping between blur samples, more would result in smoother blurs.

Standard Definition DVDs are stuck at standard TV resolution: 720×480 for NTSC or 720×520 for PAL. When you view them on a computer that is not set to a 720×480 resolution (actually 640×480 after PAR correction) then they must be res’d up to be viewed at full screen. If you view them on a computer at “100%” or “Original” size, that’s the resolution that the footage actually is.

Render times in HD are a headache, but you can do yourself a favor by not working with the HDV encoded footage in the timeline. Transcode to something like Photo JPEG and you should experience a noticeable speed up with renders. It will always take longer to render in HD just because of the exponential increase in number of pixels, but if you use an intraframe compression codec in the timeline at least AE won’t have to work as hard to figure out what each frame is supposed to look like…

[Dave LaRonde] “That just made my head hurt, Darby.”
Mission accomplished (;
All I was trying to relate was that you could rotate around an arbitrary axis if you parent it to a Null and rotate the Null.
If you just change the orientation of a layer then you’re rotating the axes of rotation as well as the layer.

Woops, looks like you forgot to put a link to the picture =)

I think parenting gives you more flexibility. You could, for example, parent your ‘spin’ layer to a null, set the Null’s orientation to 45

Also, how are you sending the “Shut Down” command to the computer?
From the apple menu?
With the keyboard?
With the button on the computer?
It’s not likely, but sometimes buttons get stuck =)

The most effective method would be using a particle generator such as Particle Playground (which renders extremely slowly) or Particular (which is all around awesome, but kind of pricey).
Alternatively you could create a few star graphics and write an expression to randomly distribute them in 3D space, within a range, applied to the position property:
range = 800;
range = range / 2;
seedRandom(index, true);
x = random(-1 * range, range);
y = random(-1 * range, range);
z = random(-1 * range, range);
[x,y,z]The above sample would randomly place a layer within a 800x800x800 cube with it’s origin at [0,0,0]. You can make modifications to this to better suit your needs. For more stars just duplicate your layers with this expression applied.
Note that this can get prohibitively slow with a lot of layers/motion blur/DOF. I recommend creating a distant starfield backdrop to help sell the look, maybe some nebulae as well? =) When objects are far from the camera you can often get away with grouping them onto a 2D plane.

You’re attempting to create frames where there are no frames. In order for this to be anywhere near successful you’ll need to enable frame blending for the layer and the composition. You can read more about this in the AE help (F1).
You can also consider using the Time Warp effect, which has more options for controlling the result than strictly using frame blending. This should be under the Effect>Time menu.
