Speed ramps&Slow downs w/ Pict sequences
Posted by Scotty Pupkin on September 14, 2007 at 5:36 amHi
I imported a series pf pics (36 of them) into AE as a pic sequence…it’s a rotating turntable truck (as I noted in another thread). Everything is gravy except for when i slow down the 360 degree move. It gives me a stutter-strobe that iss very rugged.
How can I get this “slow-down” to become smooth? I’m expanding the time (100% to 300%) for this effect….maybe there’s a better way?
thanks again!
Any info is really appreciated!Scotty

September 14, 2007 at 7:27 amYou’re attempting to create frames where there are no frames. In order for this to be anywhere near successful you’ll need to enable frame blending for the layer and the composition. You can read more about this in the AE help (F1).
You can also consider using the Time Warp effect, which has more options for controlling the result than strictly using frame blending. This should be under the Effect>Time menu.

September 14, 2007 at 3:10 pminterpolating pixels between frames to generate whole new frames isn’t exactly the ideal way to work, and it rarely works well for graphics (video footage is a little more forgiving).
can you bring those raw pics into ae? then just keyframe the rotation, but ease the final keyframe and you should get what you want. you’d also be able to enable motion blur, if needed. how complicated is the rotation?

September 14, 2007 at 4:23 pmThanks all of you….I really appreciate the help! YikesMike & Darby and Kevin!

I want to do rapid speed ramps and slow motion as I’m looking at the “turntable truck”
clip…. for example, when I ramp up to, lets say, the car badging I’d move the camera in to get a close up when it slows down….then the speed ramp would increase as the camera positioned for a wider shot. Are you suggesting I bring in each still pict file rather than an mage sequence?
thanks again

September 14, 2007 at 4:48 pmi think i understand your situation better now (i probably just needed to read a little more carefully the first time). i was thinking of rotating images like they were spinning photos or postcards, but you have and image sequence of a truck rotating…. got it.
you will be looking at having to interpolate pixels to try and smooth the motion. as darby (i think) mentioned, you can do this via timewarp effect by enabling pixel motion. timewarp ahs other settings that can be tweaked to try and fix some problems that may occur with calculating pixel motion… time remap, can also use pixel motion by enabling it under layer>frame blending and enabling preview of frame blending in the timeline (this may depend on the version of ae, ae7 and up, i think).
for the spead up parts, reelsmart motion blur, from revision, can help a lot to create a soft motion blur on your footage. you can download a demo… but specific use of a direction blur effect, or possibly linking the blur to the time remapping/timewarp effect could work well.

September 14, 2007 at 6:59 pmI hear ya
:}One last thing.
Well your info really has helped…it’s smooth now (slow mo) but the truck appears to have this “melting” effect periodically as it turns. When I increase the “BLOCK SIZE” under SMOOTHING it takes away the melting but makes he turn jitter and stutter….ANy idea?
again, thanks!

September 14, 2007 at 7:20 pmyou’ll probably end up needing to keyframe some of the values for error threshold, block size and some of the smoothing properties in the troublesome areas. it’s hard to find a one-size-fits-all setting with pixel motion, and it’s largely a trail and error thing with lots of short ram prevews.
