I want to create a short video, identical to the style of the How I Met Your Mother opening titles.

Here’s two links incase the YouTube police take them down 😛

I familiar with the basic 3D process in After Effects (camera, focal point). I can do basic flythroughs of stuff. But in particular, I’m interested in how I can achieve that identical amount of ‘blur’ (likely using the WRONG term here…) that occurs in the HIMYM titles. Especially when the camera flies by an image, there’s a slight blurry-repetition that occurs. How is this done? What settings should my camera have?

    Looks like effect>time>echo.

Do you want something in addition to Motion Blur? You can play with the Motion Blur settings in the Composition settings (cmd-K/ctrl-K). In CS3 you can even set a number of samples, fewer would result in more obvious stepping between blur samples, more would result in smoother blurs.

Andrew Kramer’s latest tutorial showed how to achieve this 3D looking effect with still images on his videocopilot.net site but now that is down until Monday so I can’t link it.

Basically its a bunch of still images all made into 3D layers and stacked into z space. Add a camera into the mix to zoom and pan etc.. These photos also look like that have a ramp effect to them and some motion blur etc..

Although I can’t link you to Andrews tutorial (check that out Monday), a pdf with good info can be found here:

Also, the film flash can be achieved using this tutorial:
