September 29, 2007 at 12:29 am in reply to: Custom brush with Stroke effect?

I create a path in ps using “custom shape” – let’s say a leaf. Then I select the entire path, copy it, and paste it onto a solid layer in after effects. it creates a layer mask. you slap the stroke effect on the layer and choose the mask as the stroke target. then you can draw the shape of the mask by using the “start” and “end” attributes.

As far as custom brushes, I’m not quite sure. I’ve only used custom shapes from ps.

technically speaking… increasing the size of footage past 100% on any footage will reduce the picture quality. It’s just a matter of how far you want to push it before the reduced quality becomes really noticeable.

So the answer to “how much” depends on each individual I guess.

September 20, 2007 at 8:25 pm in reply to: log and capture

Also, make sure you have the latest version of Quicktime installedn. It may not be the problem, but I had problems capturing because of a quicktime bug. Installing the latest quicktime upgrade fixed that.

go to apples website for more info… https://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301852

    Good luck…

September 20, 2007 at 8:20 pm in reply to: format conversion and dvd authoring

I know that Sorenson Squeeze (similar to Compressor) can do the same type of conversions.

Also, depending on your DVD authoring program, many of them convert to mpeg in the backround while you’re working on the other dvd features (like menu, etc). iDVD does this, and I’m pretty sure DVD Studio Pro does this (but I’m not 100% sure on that one). But it depends on the dvd authoring program you’re using…

Another option… if you upgrade to Quicktime Pro, you should be able to use that to convert to mpeg-2.

Hope this helps… and good luck.

    September 13, 2007 at 11:09 pm in reply to: Rotating Stills_in 3d space_PLEASE HELP

if you already have the stills of the 360 view, you don’t need a camera, right? just import all of the stills as an image sequence and let your still images do the work of circling around the car. unless i’m completely missing what you’re trying to do…

what kinds of problems did you have in mind? i’ve noticed a general lack of picture quality, but that’s more to do with it being dv. Did you have specific problems?

September 13, 2007 at 12:17 am in reply to: Importing/Exporting Final Cut to After Effects CS3

With your video, try exporting using a quicktime reference (uncheck the “make movie self-contained” boxin the export quicktime movie dialog). This will export a reference quicktime that uses your original finalcut footage. Also, what’s your fcp video (dv, 10-bit, 8-bit?) make sure you’re rendering out of AE with the correct settings. Is your final cut footage lowerfield? Then render out of AE with lower field (not single field).

This is not an unusual workflow, so you should have no problems. Just make sure your render settings in AE match your original footage from FCP.

September 12, 2007 at 9:02 pm in reply to: exporting to flash (flv)

After Effects has export options for both swf and flv files. I think you can use the render queue or just go to the export menu…

September 8, 2007 at 8:47 am in reply to: Exporting QT’s with Alpha into Avid?

Are you rendering using an Avid codec? If so, here’s something that may be causing your problem…

First, make sure your comp is 720×486 D1 NTSC, because Avid Uncompressed or Compressed codec requires it. And make sure in the render queue you have rgb+alpha selected with the proper alpha settings (premultiplied for hard edges, straight for soft edges and gradiation)

Second, if you’re using any Avid codec to render out your quicktime from AE, then make sure when you import into Avid you select “use existing” for your alpha channel option. Many people instinctively select “invert existing” out of habit, but the Avid codec in the quicktime already inverts it as it should be.

You can also invert the alpha after importing it into Avid if you need to. You place the clip into your timeline, open up your effects editor, and invert the alpha from there.

If this doesn’t help, give some more details about what your trying to do.

September 8, 2007 at 1:32 am in reply to: Help me please

sounds like when you try to import the file, you’re attempting to import it as a project by accident. When your import window opens up, make sure you have “footage” selected.

Or it may be that your file isn’t a compatible AE file.

Importing a file with AE 6.5 is pretty much the same as importing with AE 7, so the process should be exactly the same.

    Good luck…
