  • Hi Paul, the answer is yes. Here is a section from the V8 manual that mentions it.

A Note About RED HDR Media and Performance
Since RED HDR media records two complete streams of image data, DaVinci Resolve must simultaneously decode two separate tracks whenever you add a second Source bar. If you don’t add the second Source bar, only the first stream is decoded.
Because of this, whether you’re relying on your computer’s CPU to decode RED media, or you’re using a single RED ROCKET card, you’ll get half the performance when using the highlight stream of an HDR clip.
To improve performance, you can set any RED HDR clip’s Render Cache Mode to “User” by choosing Session > Render Cache Mode, pressing Option-R, or pressing the CACHE MODE button on the T-bar panel of your control surface repeatedly until you toggle to User mode. DaVinci Resolve renders all cached clips in the background, so the next time you play a cached clip, it will play at full speed.
If you regularly use RED HDR media, two RED ROCKET cards are recommended for optimal decoding performance.

I’ve done a couple of jobs recently where I have been provided a Pro Res 4444 with an embedded Alpha channel. There was a request to extract, which obviously I could not do (until I saw the Dailymotion vid yesterday!!).

The system just ignored it and treated it as a standard Pro Res file. Didn’t have any trouble at all with it.

Only thing that was an issue for the client is that when i rendered my grade back to Pro Res 4444 the alpha was missing. Caused a bit of an issue at their end in the online but the Resolve didn’t struggle at all with it.

When it arrives you’ll see that an easy thing to do.

On the front page use the “assist using reel number from” and you choose file name or folder name or define it yourself.

Use it all the time for 5D jobs where there is no timecode whatsoever!

Try changing the pixel aspect ratio of that one clip in the browse page once your media is in the media pool. 35mm HD anamorphic might work? You may lose top and bottom of image though.

Although it sounds like setting the format converter for that clip to 1920×1080 might pull your image in to the right shape.

From memory (haven’t done it sine V7). If you add the red files at anything other than full res premium you can’t then change it back to full res.
BMD please correct me if I’m wrong!!

You need to add it at Full res then once its in your media pool you can downsize it to half res good for better playback. Just make sure before you render you put it back to Full res premium for best quality output.

Or, if you need to see the images moving. Use the playheads function.

Select the clip you are on and then the shot before or after (or both) hit loop and then you can see the shots playing side by side. Can add up to 4 so your screen is quad split and will play all.

  • There are no window shape presets for that sort of thing yet. But its really easy to just draw the shape of the window you need with “node+pcw”.

Seen similar features for preset window shapes in the baselight and although they are quite cool, its probably just as easy to draw them yourself.

  • Love it Love it!
My favourite new function (for the minute) is the noise reducer. I just finished a music video that was perfect for trying it out as there was a considerable amount of noise in the blacks and it now looks amazing. Applied in at the end in track mode and its definitely improved the images. No smearing or weird things happening in fast motion. Definitely comparable to a standalone NR like MNR10 etc.

    Quality product!

Some documentation on Avid workflows would be nice as I’m not Avid savvy yet.

Having fun with 8 so far and I’d also love to know if anyone is doing any Alpha work……..

I just received a Pro Res 4444 with an Alpha channel but as yet can’t find a way to view it as a separate element, is this possible? Or do I need a Matte supplied as well??

Also has anyone had any issues with playing back 25PsF MXF files? Mine plays for a bit then the dreaded spinning wheel of death hangs my system!

    Cheers

    Danny
