Although you would still need particles to spice up the effect, you may also be able to use Andrew Kramer’s free new Saber plugin to get you most of the way there also.

You could also try messing around with a long shadow technique and some masking. Probably won’t achieve the exact look in the video this way though.

If you used a Shape Layer stroke with Trim Paths as a track matte, you could precomp it and temporarily mask out the unwanted reveal where the lines cross.

June 22, 2016 at 7:12 pm in reply to: Red Frames Issue in 2015.3

The red frames issue is something that has dogged Adobe for years, and despite claims of having fixed it, it is alive and well in every version of Premiere or After Effects I’ve used. I don’t run into it often, but when I do my usual fix is to convert the media to something else and edit that. It’s inconvenient most times, to say the least. I’ve had it happen to numerous codecs: ProRes, H.264, XDCAM, etc.

I’ve heard it stems from the software filling in missing frames in order to match the correct clip length, but I don’t know how true that is.

Is your sequence set to use square pixels? You can check in Sequence Settings.

I believe this new magical camera also records 400 GB/s so stock up on hard drives. 😉

  • You could try combining the Beam and Glow effects, with maybe some particles from CC Particle World. It’s hard to know exactly what you are going for.

If you are willing to use a free 3rd party plugin, Andrew Kramer’s Saber plugin sounds perfect for the job.

June 9, 2016 at 6:42 pm in reply to: Why do we need motion blur at all?

The shutter speed of a camera is usually low enough to capture motion blur, but creating motion graphics doesn’t involve a shutter of course, so each frame is perfectly sharp. Standard frame rates are too low for human eyes to naturally blur the created motion, so AE provides a way to simulate that. I believe around 200 fps is the point where the eye doesn’t need fake motion blur.

I say it is perfectly ok not to use motion blur. If it looks better with it off, go with it off! A lower third sliding onto a screen doesn’t have to simulate the real world, since it’s not in the real world. It all depends on the look you are going for.

  • Interesting. Glad you figured it out.

  • If you select your layer and press the “u” key, it will show all of your keyframes on that layer. To toggle the keyframe path view in the composition window, toggle the Mask and Shape Path Visibility button.
