it´s no good idea to use layered menus – not in DVD Studio nor in Encore. layered menus are behaving very slow and they are somhow critical on computers where parts of your menu could disappear.

so you better use the button-overlay-technique to create your buttons.

if your creating a BD that´s another story.

Hi Bruce,
as you´are creating a BD that needs to play the film only (without menus) you can ignor these informations, and go to built straight away.

according to your 2nd issue:
you need to select video>BDMV-folder, then create a new disk and put the BDMV and certificates-folder that you previously has been creating on the right side.

that should work.

last toast-version is 10.0.8.

as far as I know Encore couldn´t read/write DLT-tapes, not CS5 nor any versions before.

you need to have a seperate application like gearmaster pro (on PC) or DVD AfterEdit ME (on MAC) for that.

I have created a few BDs using the manual assignment and it worked well over here.

are you sure, you turned off the auto-routing?

according to seamless playback of menus I could say that menus for BD were created in a different way, as jon mentioned before.

the IG (interactive)-stream, is the stream that containing the informations that you know as button-overlay within DVD. it is much more complex than button-overlay and can have in/out-effects as well, but this can´t be done with encore.

creating IG-streams (or better graphics for it) is a lot work, much more than creating a button-overlay for DVD.

maybe there will be a FULL mac-BD-authoring-system in future! rivergate software is working on it.

I don´t know exactly how you set the intro-parts of your menu, but you´re having a 1sec-(black-)delay beween all clips if they are not in a seamless flagged playlist.

so if you´re jumping between titles you´ll always have a short (black) delay. I´ve never seen a possibilty to set seamless motion-menus within encore CS5.

if you need to create seamless working menus you might need to use another BD-authoring-application.

it´s a BD-spec-thing, no more, no less.

it´s a bit more complex to describe it in a simple way!

you need to learn the basics first. you can´t burn a MPEG2-file on a DVD to play it back on standalone-players.

DVDs needs to be authored/programmed with DVD-authoring-applications like adobe Encore or apple DVD Studio Pro.

to author DVDs you need elementary video- and audio-streams and within the authoring-app you´re creating the logical connetions between all asset – menus, videos, audio and subtitles.

the final progress would be to mulitplex all these assets into a DVD(-folder) and to burn it to your DVD+/-R or to give it to replication-facility.

all professional codecs are upper field first, but there is other thing you need to care of.

computer-animations and grafic-stuff is far to sharp and have diffenent luma/croma-levels.

while you are rendering with RGB-values from 0-255, TV works at YUV-level, that´s RGB 16-235.

this could cause bad flicking on tube-TVs. so you need to soften your picture with a 1-2px 90 degrees-blur and you need to reduce the color-levels from 0-255 to 16-235.
