DV-PAL is the worst codec you could use, because it is 4:2:0 only.

you better use animation codec, uncompressed 8 or 10bit, or if you´re working on mac you could use PRO RES HQ as well.

as your animation is progressive, you could easily encode it to any interlaced format as you want but it´s possible to encode it to progressive MPEG2 for DVD, too.

if you would like to have a full working hybrid DVD, with VIDEO_TS and DVD_ROM-data on it it used to be a real UDF-DVD, because a VIDEO-DVD is UDF by spec, otherwise it wont be played in stand-alone-players.

you need to create a DDP-image for replication that containing ALL your data (video_TS, audio_ts and your ROM-content).

the easiest way to do so is to create your DDP-image and burn it on an optical disk using file-formate UDF for the disk.

there will be one folder (layer 0) for DVD-5, or two folders (layer 0 and layer 1) for DVD-9

each of them needs to be burn on a DVD-R-5. best is to send a duplicate as well in fact as they´ll have read/write errors on the disk.

label them carefully with the layers and you wont have a problem with your replication.

the file-extentions will be:

.m2v or .264

and yes, 720p23,98 is not part of BD-spec, if you would like to stay at 23.98p, you need to upscale to 1080p23.98.

hi Trine,
a lot problems happen because of the scaling from 1440×1080 to 1920×1080 that is happening as the video will be played.

all beamers working progressive, so interlaced is no good to send to them, because the video will be deinterlaced interally, and it wont be used good algorithms.

and of course you need to care about the players mode as well.

if you also have digital artefacts within your original HDV-video you can choose innobits purifer to get rid of it and to scale it to 1920×1080. it´s really worth the price. I use it a lot to deinterlace and scale.

it´s no good idea to scale using MPEG Streamclip, or to export it to pro res with it, because the result will be more artefacts in this case. it can´t scale 1440 to 1920 as good as purifer.

if you´re importing from tape to Pro Res you´ll have no GOPs and you can get in a better workflow.

finally I would use h264 instead of MPEG2HD for your BD.

there are some issues you need to be awared!

1.) HDV
HDV is 1440×1080 or maybe 960×720, depending if you´ve recorded 1080 or 720.

I guess you´ve chosen 1080i, so it´s 1440×1080 interlaced.

2.) interlaced video and progressive displays wont match, who do you think is doing the deinterlacing for that? your bd-player or the beamer? and in which quality, so what do you expect?

3.) especially cheap beamer can´t work with other frame-rates than US-framerates and wont play 1080i50 smoothly and will shutter for some reasons. what is the beamers native resolution?

4.) HDV is MPEG long-GOP-format, so what do you expect if you´re cascading encodings, if your encoding to MPEG2HD for BD again?

here are some important questions:

a) why you´ve chosen apple intermedite instead of apple HDV-codec or Pro Res

b) at which frame-rate you´ve been recording

I´m not familiar with AE, but I know you can create/duplicate your project and change your AE project-settings.

AE is doing a really good job on upscaling, I would do this in AE instead of the media encoder.

oh, another issue:
all encore prior CS5 will only accept 1080p23.98 and NO 1080p24, so if you have CS5 you wont have a problem, if not, you need to change your project-setting to 1080p23.98.

720p24 is not BD-spec!

BD-spec is:

1080p23.98, 1080p24, 1080i60, (1080i50)

720p60, (720p50)

(576i25)

480i

NOTE: 25fps/50fps is only mandatory for BD-players that are distributed within coutries that broadcast in 25i or 50i/p like europe and ausi. they wont work in US and the rest of the world.

the most easy way would be to upscale to 1080p24 and start over
