My macbook pro (which a 2.2 i7, meaning lower spec’d than your imac likely) runs DNx444 just fine. It obviously isn’t quite as snappy with other DNxHD flavors but it plays back fine even on my internal 5400rpm drive.

I think TV viewership will continue to increase for a long time to come. True, there are sectors of (mostly western, young) audiences that are turning to the internet, but isn’t stopping the over all trend.

FCPX comes out with magnetic timeline. Out of touch Adobe Exec: “Crap…apple is doing something trendy! Quick, implement this!”
1 year later: Adobe Exec: “OK well that didn’t pan out. Just hand off the code to the photoshop team. Keep doing that normal video editing stuff you do.”

I guess I’m the odd one-out judging from the other comments. But I’ll speak honestly.
I’m here solely because FCP used to be such a big part of my life/carrer, that I keep tabs mostly out of habit.
I have embraced MC6 and Premiere Pro to the extent that I never use FCP7 anymore, nevermind X. I feel satisfied, creatively and technically, and this makes it very hard to care about X.
I don’t believe that it will be a real competitor to Avid anymore (and by ‘real’ I mean that it needs to take sizeable market share in the broadcast world). As of right now I have no desire to use (anymore), but web browsing habits persist.
Obviously, I still find joy in reading the opinions/thoughts of others — which is what keeps the browsing habit alive.

Out of any time in history, now is the time to actually “believe” in Avid, rather than not.
For 8 years (or something to that tune) they’ve posted financial losses every quarter. This last quarter they saw a profit. So… I guess the proof is in the numbers.

I run a harpertown 8 core (2008). It works great. MC6 rarely ever uses beyond 4 cores, so you will fare mostly the same as me for 80% of your work.
Only consolidating and sometimes rendering uses all the cores, when using DNxHD.

I think your confusion is this part of the process:
Snow Leopard’s kernel defaults to 32bit mode. However, due to the way that OSX is engineered, the 32bit kernel is capable of running 64bit programs, and accessing large amounts of ram like a 64bit kernel.
The perceived limitations of a 32bit kernel only exist on the Windows side.
