  • CS 5.5 apps running in 32-bit system?

Posted by John Ward on March 20, 2012 at 3:02 pm

    Hi, All –

long time lurker, infrequent poster, interesting question. We recently purchased Production Premium CS5 including, of course, AE 5.5 & Premiere Pro 5.5 which can only run on 64-bit systems. We have had to put it on an older Mac Pro (1,1 hardware series) which theoretically was just before 64-bit hardware was introduced. Long story short, we don’t have 64-bit but PP5.5 and AE5.5 are opening and running on our system.
My questions are 1) how is this possible? and B) what are the potential pitfalls of running these programs this way?
I should also mention that I have been told there is currently no hardware upgrade in my future so if your knee-jerk reaction is to respond that we should upgrade our hardware, don’t bother. I already agree with you but it has no bearing on my current situation.

    System specs
    Mac Pro, 2 x dual-core xeons @ 2.66GHz
    7GB RAM
    OS X 10.6.8
    no 64-bit kernel or extensions

Thanks in advance for your time,

If your running snow leopard or lion, those are 64bit
capable o/s. Likely the reason they are running.

Even the old G5 systems (I just sold two of recently) if
you look on the box it says 64-bit computer on it.

The odd part is they aren’t in the system requirements minimum.

    interesting discussion.

    John,

I don’t understand why you say that this is not a 64-bit system.

I couldn’t tell you exactly where I read but at one point I thought I had tracked down that the 1,1 hardware version of the Mac Pro was incapable of any 64-bit processing … that it wasn’t until the 1,2 hardware that it was introduced. My understanding was that the CS5.5 apps needed 64-bit hardware support. In my ‘System Profiler’ there is actually a section which says ’64-bit kernel and extensions not supported’.

All that said, I am no stranger to humble pie and would love to know if I’ve just misunderstood things.

    Thanks for your time.

Sorry, I meant 2,1 hardware update, not 1,2. Been a while.

You don’t need to be able to run the 64-bit OS kernel to run 64-bit applications on Mac OS.

Here’s a blog post that I wrote to dispel that myth:

Thanks, Todd. Guess I didn’t understand it as well as I thought I did but, ultimately, that’s much better news for me in the short term. I appreciate your help.

I think your confusion is this part of the process:

Snow Leopard’s kernel defaults to 32bit mode. However, due to the way that OSX is engineered, the 32bit kernel is capable of running 64bit programs, and accessing large amounts of ram like a 64bit kernel.

The perceived limitations of a 32bit kernel only exist on the Windows side.

Got it now. Or at least I believe so. Thanks for the reply.
