I’m working on a longer-term project, a documentary. I am still trying to find a backup solution that works.
I create a new event for each day that I shoot. I now have 50 events. The trouble is, sometimes I will log and apply keywords to multiple events… and there’s no easy way to backup the “work” I do (that doesn’t also copy the optimized media I may or may not have created.
I came across this thread because I am wondering what would happen if I created one big “master” event. That way at least I could work on and then backup the “CurrentVersion.fcpevent” file in one swoop.
What are the drawbacks I’m not thinking of?
Keep in mind that I will be dealing with hundreds of hours of footage.

It bothers me a lot.
For me this lack of manual control manifests itself when I am backing up events and moving events between computers.
As I work, I am constantly adding metadata (keywords, markers, etc) to my footage. There is no easy way to back this stuff up with (for instance) a simple drag and drop operation without including all those damn render files.
I’m moving between computers, backing things up… I’m getting by, but I’m using this BS workaround using Disk Images so that my Events and Projects connect:

As far as the proxy workflow, I found this thread (that contains a link to a second thread)…. but have not tested it myself:
For now I am using Steve Martin’s technique. However, I really do not like operating this way..

You definitely have to be careful when moving/copying Events, since the disks your media and Events reside are relevant to the reconnect function (i.e. ‘Modify Event References’). I hate that we have to use this workaround to move Events/media between computers:

For the time being, I am simply trying to backup my media and the work that I do, while taking the adequate precautions against hard drive failure.

I, too, am looking for an easy backup solution.
I’m making a feature-length documentary, shooting on the 5d, I’m going to have a LOT of footage over the next 12 months.
While I transcode the h264 to ProRes for editing, I am backing up only this:
– the 5d’s CF cards (i.e. the h264 media, which can be anywhere from 10GB to 50GB per shoot day)
– the FCP X Events and Projects folders (i.e. my work).Unfortunately it’s not as straight-forward as it used to be. All the sequences, edits, markers, notes, and logging info used to be contained within one, relatively small FCP 7 project file. The render files were stored separately and could be easily discarded and recreated.
With FCP X the logging info/keywords/metadata for my media is stored in the Events folders. My edits are stored in Project folders. Both of these are my “work” and thus need backing up. Worse, some render files (transcoded media) are stored in the Events folder while others (render files created when color corrections are applied) are stored in the Projects folder.
I do not want to back up these render files, and so at the end of each day, backing up my work requires sifting through folders manually…. not the simple drag and drop operation that I would prefer.

I ran into this same problem with music. Thankfully a music track is small and the workaround isn’t too inconvenient.
The upgrade to FCP X needs to include a manual override to the automatic ‘reconnect media’/’modify references’ situation we current have.

Skimming’s it though. With skimming, hovering, pressing ‘c’ to selecting a clip, comma and period to trim, moving the mouse (to skim) and hitting spacebar to play… I’m beginning to make use of every motion I make to edit/trim/adjust edits more efficiently than ever. It’s nice.
Definitely looking forward to the program being more stable. Which it will be.

No I know I can access media on whatever drives are mounted on my system. I guess what I really want is an easy way to transfer the metadata (i.e. the logging info) that I generate while on the road that doesn’t require me editing off the portable HD I happened to use when logging.
I also want a way to back up that metadata. Do I have to backup my Final Cut Events folder? My backup solution now filling up with the card clones I shoot and archive daily.
