Activity Forums Apple Final Cut Pro Reconnect

I was just wondering how many other folks see the lack of being able to reconnect changed media as one of the major issues with the software?

I am getting into the final stages of the big FCPX test project and I became more and more enamored by the software as I worked. The .01 update fixed a lot of my issues.

But for me the inability to reconnect hurts a lot more than any of the other issues.

I frequently do a lot of After Effects work and incorporate the resulting rendered movies into my projects.

There is often the time that a client might change something and I simply make the change in AE and re-render the AE file. In the old FCP you could do this and all the changes would appear in your FCP sequence.

In FCPX , the re-rendered file is no longer recognized as existing and one must hand place the new AE movies into the timeline—there is no way to reconnect.

This is terrible from my point of view but I was wondering if it was bothering anyone else as much.

    Thanks,

    Lance

    It bothers me a lot.

For me this lack of manual control manifests itself when I am backing up events and moving events between computers.

As I work, I am constantly adding metadata (keywords, markers, etc) to my footage. There is no easy way to back this stuff up with (for instance) a simple drag and drop operation without including all those damn render files.

I’m moving between computers, backing things up… I’m getting by, but I’m using this BS workaround using Disk Images so that my Events and Projects connect:

What a pain in the ass.

A bit off topic, but something the Apple White paper suggests to hide projects, archive, or back them up is to simply move the event and project folder to another drive. Copying them back will retain all the information. The key is that you take THE WHOLE FOLDER the event is in.

Im not sure if this is the same thing but I posted a tip that when I lost all my connections to the original QT files, re-importing into the same Event as your prev connected both Event and Project.
This if course are the actual files that were dis-connected.
Maybe different if you render the same lenght and format/name?
I would have to test this.

I believe I have tested this and it doesn’t work. Would love to have someone confirm

    Thanks,

In this method (rerendering over a current file), it does not work, and its a pain.

Is there another workflow that I may be missing?

    Thanks,

This option took a long time to get in to FCP Legacy.

The only way is to version it, import, and replace. A pain.

I would suggest sending feedback to Apple about it.

[Eben Abbaan] ” There is no easy way to back this stuff up with (for instance) a simple drag and drop operation without including all those damn render files.”

I’m not sure I understand. Why don’t you just duplicate the project inside the application and uncheck the “Include Render Files” checkbox if you don’t want to back up the render files?

It’s bothersome indeed. One thing that might make replacing clips easier in large sequences is to make sure to create and assign a GFX role to your gfx. That way, if you have to import a 2nd version and replace, you can find the gfx much easier.

    Matt,

I tried this recently. It doesn’t work and now I’m facing a quandary.

Closed FCPX down; opened my scratch drive; created new folder for archiving; moved events and projects to respectively named folders; 3 weeks later came back to look at them; moved events and projects BACK to their original folders; all I get is !!!!!!!! in my project.

    Am I doing this incorrectly?

    Lawrence
