if you have a super computer, AVCHD wont be a problem… my Quad i7 despises AVCHD.

i have to transcode AVCHD, which takes about 9x the length of the film.

MiniDV is very cheap, and you have backup. if you lose a hard drive, you could lose footage with AVCHD…

    i love my xha1, but i love my 5d more 😀

if you send it to the mothership, will you reply to this post with the diagnoses and what sage did about it ? i have the same sage insurance on this camera.

i had a CCD go bad once on my old pd-170, and it was super psychedelic. the color looked super far out.. not an effect that could be created with white balance.

I tried to do the exact opposite with my XHA1. The solution was bulky, needed a power plug, and wasnt cheap. instead… i picked up an LCD that did both… have you tested that you can even use the 7d with a monitor? i stumbled with my 5d via HDMI as a monitor. it will only let me view what has already been shot.

i battled the HDMI on my 5d, i finally gave up. IMHO canon didnt do a very good job with the manual on this subject.

i had to buy the canon hdmi, because my sony one wouldnt work.

    I had a similar problem with xha1.
my work around for HDV split and xha1 was to
    1) close all programs
    2) plug in the camera
    3) press play
    4) wait to see time stamp moving
    5) THEN start HDVsplit
    6) hit record

luckily hdvsplit will save the tapename/settings.

how much of the tape are you capturing at a time?
i wanna say that the limit for HDV is 21 minutes before you get drift.

on pc i capture the whole tape with HDV split. Scene Detection prevents this (for me)

shoot me if im wrong…but… your mic may need phantom power, and i dont think xl1 provides it.
does the mic your using have a battery?
    have you checked your cable?

    good luck

battery: buy a couple extras… nothing worse than not having enough power to complete the shoot (except for tape!) i got Impact brand from BH.. also, dont buy the ebay ones… they died on me. the battery meter works with Impact brand. i got the huge 970s. if you can afford the cam.. you should be able to spring for a couple extra bats.

low light: what are you planning on shooting? i.e. weddings? the automatic gain option should be turned off, and if your going to be shooting in very low light, crank the manual gain to where you need it. bottom line, with out light, your image will be dark OR it will be grainy. I prefer the low light performance over my old pd170.

    good luck
