Probably not the cheapest solution out there, but I’ve recently been playing around with Cinema 4D with great results. The learning curve is not a bad either. Following a quick logo tutorial found here on the COW and one or two other quick and easy tutorials found on the web I am able to do some really cool 3D animations.

If so, Ive had virtual clusters randomly dissapear on me since the passed couple QT/fcp updates and have had to rebuild them periodicaly in qmaster

Be sure the Dell monitors you look up to compare have pixel resolutions of 1900X1200 or greater.
I personally use dual 23″ Apple cinema displays (recently made unavailable from the apple store), and love that set up. It works great for me because I’m often using multiple programs simultaneously, and some of those programs are better served over two screens. If I was only in AE all day, i would be fine with a single display (along with a broadcast monitor of some sort).
I have also seen friends dell set-ups that look very nice, and they saved a few hundred bucks each or so over my set up…

If you can afford it, I’d also suggest a combination of both.
I find I use both quite a bit. For my main editor I use FCP over PPro. I personally find FCP faster for me to use and a superior product. My first home suite was PPro based and I thought it was the cats-a** until I started working more and more with FCP over Avid at various shops.. I’d never switch back.For quick mo-graph I use Motion over AE because it is so fast, but for building bigger comps AE works better and has greater functionality (IMO)
If you work with client logos and various other still gfx, then you will almost certainly need at least photoshop, if not also illustrator, as Motion plays nice with .ai and .eps files to keep your logos nice and crisp. There is no alternative in FSC for either of these programs.
STP is far better than Audition or Soundbooth, but on a recent long form project it fell apart on me, so on the next I think I’m going back to Protools LE.
I personally find DVDSP far superior to Encore, but Encore can do blueray(in theory)
If I had to choose one suite over the other, I’d definitely go with FCS over CS4, however you will most likely need to get a hold of Photoshop.
Both have their ups and downs. I have both and use every program from FCS and compliment that with PS, AE and AI. The rest of the CS programs I feel don’t add up to their FCS counterparts, so I don’t use them.

I use compressor quite regularly and quite intensively (large batches with multiple compression output settings) on my octo (’08 3.2) and haven’t had a single hang-up or abnormal occurrence lately. (all current updates installed)

You want to take an existing piece of music, and run it through a filter or two to make is sound like your own creation??

Step1 resize all the windows to how you would like them
Step2 save this as a custom layout
step3 right click in the thin area just above the timeline, in between the sequence tabs and the snap and link buttons. choose “show Button List.” Drop down “Window Menu” Now drag the “Custom Layout” icon to where the snap and link buttons are.I would also put standard layout, and which ever other layouts you use in there.
Also/alternatively if you don’t want to add the buttons to the bar, once you have the custom layout made, you can use “SHIFT+U” to switch to the custom layout.

It does play just fine. No rendering required at all. Just curious as to what could trigger a “file not optimized” warning in this situation.
