There’s a few different ways depending on what is causing the beachball.

1) get faster drives ie: RAID If you are on a macpro tower even a 3 drive software stripe is good enough for multiple stream realtime playback of all but the higher end uncompressed formats.
2) under the RT pulldown lower the playback quality (rt pulldown-top left of the timeline)
3) under the RT pulldown lower the frame rate
4) convert your footage to a lower offline quality to edit with
5) if your drives should be fast enough to playback the material you are having trouble with, free up space on those drives because they are probably full and your material fragmented

You can work with the BPAV folders on a hardrive rather than the SXS card. I have done this many times without issue.

Sounds like you are plugging into a mic level input, and should be plugging into a line level input. Dose your mixer have either a line/mic level switch on the input, or dedicated mic and dedicated line inputs, or are they all mic level?

What exactly do you mean? Are you talking about export settings? Are you trying to export a quicktime file from motion that will play on a PC?

Im running an ’08 2.5mhz 512MB NVidia 8600M GT MBP. Works great for on the road editing. In fact I’m set up in a hotel room ATM with my MBP cutting away prepping for an upcoming live broadcast.

My main machine is an octo MacPro which obviously spanks the MBP, but I do a fair bit of work on the road and the MBP with an external drive performs very well. You will definitely want to max the ram, you don’t need to do this from apple, you can get RAM chips for a great price from other online vendors. Motion eats up ram like crazy and when it fills up, and it will, your machine will slow to a crawl. Just be sure to clear the ram preview every so often (Mark ->RAM preview ->Clear Ram Preview) even if you haven’t rendered a preview.

I’ve had this issue as well, and for me, found it occurred occasionally (sometimes very often) when I would render a graphic (motion or still) over a nested sequence. Like yourself I used the razor tool to make a cut, but did on either the first frame after the overlaying GFX or the last frame before the overlay, whichever was needed. Then the video would pop back into sync without having to be re-rendered.

Still becomes unrendered. I had many instances of nests with smoothed clips in it. Didn’t matter if it was in a nest or not.
Mind you I never tried applying smooth-cam to the nest rather than the clip… not sure if that would even work..

Definitely not a real ‘fix’ as in you render and it stays rendered. But after rendering the same clip over and over and over again doing a self-contained saves a little grief. (Sometimes I like to keep the original clip in V1 and place the new one on V2 just incase I want to make a change to the clip pre-flattened. Depends on what is on it before export.)
