[Matthew Blythe] “Daystar tells me that my levels are low on the vectorscope, and that that may be causing the problem.”

By low do they mean your whites aren’t reaching 100, or are your blacks too low? Is your IOLA or deck set up to add pedestal/set-up on the way to the deck? BetaSP blacks need to be at 7.5 IRE vs digital 0 IRE.

Also, if you don’t have access to something better, do your downconversion through Compressor rather than re-rendering on the timeline. Be sure to change the resize filter to ‘Best”

This is exactly what i do as well for clients both out of town, and even in town clients like the ease of just DL’ing a small QT movie to save them or I a trip across town.

As walter suggested I use my MobileMe account to distribute.

I have also set up gmail accounts for some clients for this purpose. Gmail allows attachments up to 20MB which is typically more than enough to send segments and receive gfx files and such.

[Michael Shick] ” I’m actually better off with a component connection vs. MXO + DVI?”

In my opinion, yes. You already have a 2K+ display. No need shelling out another K to eat up a display port and give you functionality(calibration) you already have when you could go intensity pro for less than half that and keep your second DVI port free for either a second computer monitor or GPU performance.

Also adding a card gives you great I/O options on top of monitoring… for less money.
I would personally stay away from the MXO.

[Shane Ross] “Doesn’t that monitor have SDI in”

The JVC DT-V24L1 Michael has doesn’t have SDI. The DT-V24LU has SDI.
Using the MXO kills a DVI out that could be used for a second computer monitor.

April 5, 2009 at 8:24 pm in reply to: Help: Viewer timecode differences

    [William Shand]
Eventually I noticed that the two “Viewer” windows on each computer varied slightly with their time codes. On one computer the time code turns over to 0 after it reaches 23 milliseconds, and the other after it reaches 29.

Perhaps by milliseconds you mean frames?
Sounds like the project settings on one are set for 24fps and the other 30fps(29.97)

After throwing a few show mixes at STP I went back to ProTools.
It works great for some things, but the larger the project the more unstable, volatile, and mind numbing it becomes.

Try this, as it worked for me to get around a few hang ups I experienced:

First off, once the project opens, don’t do anything until STP had written all the waveform overlays. This can take up to 10min depending on the amount of audio you sent, and wether it is all the proper format/sample. If you don’t do this, STP can hang and crash as you are experiencing.

If this doesn’t cure your ailments, once the project opens, and all the waveform overlays have been written, do a ‘save as’ and select ‘collect audio files’ and ‘collect video file’ and save it to your media drive.

[Shane Ross] “Although I think the MXO and ACD combo is superior, because you can balance the monitor properly to bars. “

Not in this case. The JVC the OP has has full calibration control and blue only. It is IMO superior for monitoring over a MXO/ACD combo.

I use the JVC DT-V24L1 in my studio hooked up through a Kona LHe and love it. You will definitely need to loose the DVI connection and hook it up via component through a capture card.

To save $$ the intensity pro card from BMD is a great cost effective way to go.

[James Whittington] “Since I’m already creating ProRes versions (maybe…see above) is this acceptable for laying to tape? “

I switched to a Prores workflow a few months ago and have delivered many shows shot either Digibeta or HDCam, captured and edited either ProRes / Prores HQ. Once done, I export a self contained QT of the final timeline complete with test signal and slate to be output back to the source tape format for network delivery.
All you need to do is make sure the facility that will be doing the output can work with the Prores QT.

March 24, 2009 at 8:48 pm in reply to: AJA Kona 6.0.3 question

Perhaps I’m mistaken and had the deck down-convert on output while ingesting. Weird though, I remember wondering to myself which would do the better down-conversion, the Sony HDV deck, or the AJA card, and thought I decided to feed the card component HD and let it do the down-convert. This was a few months ago, the deck was a rental i don’t have anymore so the memory is a little foggy.

Really!? Im sure I’ve used it to down convert 1080i component to 525 Prores on ingest into FCP….
