JVC DT-V24L1 in FCP color workflow
I recently got a JVC DT-V24L1 (no SDI) handed down to me at work and I’m trying to figure out the best way to work it into my HVX200-FCP workflow. I’m mostly interested in having a decent place to color correct, something that will hopefully break the chain of frustrating FCP gamma shifts in my finished videos. My work is all smaller and web-only, so no need to go crazy.
Right now I have the monitor plugged into DVI port 2 on my Mac Pro, and it’s basically being handled like another monitor plugged into the system. This worries me, because I assume Apple/FCP is still going to try to engage in it’s colorsync wizardry. I also notice at the display appears sort of washed out and dull in comparison to my Cinema Display.
What I’m wondering is, am I going to be no better off with this set up than simply using a good calibrated computer monitor? Is my issue here that I’m getting a RGB color space out of that DVI port, but the monitor would prefer YUV? Do I really need some sort of $2k-$3k capture card, like a Kona, or are there any more budget conscious options, keeping in mind I don’t need any bells & whistles, and am fine without major hardware acceleration (the computer is more than fast enough). How about the Matrox MXO? Are there even less expensive options, maybe just a very simple card that gives a YUV DVI out, and nothing else?
Thanks for any help.
