To clarify..

I am trying to export from FCP to a SxS card in the express slot on a MBP.

I need to put some footage from FCP onto the the SxS card, then load the SxS card into the eX-3 so I can play the footage back on the ex-3.

This may not be the case,, but I’ve seen it stump a few people.

Check the A/V settings tab in the Audio/Video Settings dialogue box
( Final Cut Pro –> Audio/Video settings… –> A/V Devices Tab )

Make sure there ISN’T a checkmark in the checkbox for “Different Output for Edit to Tape…”

The g-speed es would be their version of the product you have.

I own two g-speed es units and a 2tb g-raid. I haven’t had any issues with any of them. Also, Hitachi owns GTech,,, so it really isn’t any mystery what kind of drives you are getting inside.

I love it too! Been using it for a couple years now as well/

Having the jog wheel and sliders is great and a real time saver. Though I do wish I could map more functions to the way to many keys FCP/STP doesn’t use (like turning audio keyframe latching on/off.)

I also wish FCP/STP would use the display better.
if you’ve ever had the pleasure of using your MCU with ProTools you’d know what I mean!

In FCP go Tools –> Control Surface.
You will need the audio mixer window open in FCP.

The Control Universal Pro is only partially functional in FCP and Soundtrack Pro.

The big trick is to use settings that match your FCP sequence settings.

Pick your codec/format flavour in fcp, then use mpeg streamclip to export a QT movie using the same settings and codec.

Get the best thing you can comfortably afford.

Personally, I would not get an iMac. Too many limitations for my tastes.

That leaves the MBP and MP tower. Processing power, connectivity, and upgradability over portability. Which is more important to you?

I have both and use both daily. I prefer to work on the tower because rendering/encoding is sooo fast along with the attached RAID storage and Kona card. However I do a lot of ‘on-the-road’ editing and am not disappointed with the performance of my MBP.

The version of Core Melt that shipped with ver1 of FX Factory had a plugin called Noise Limiter. Works OK.
The Noise Industries Noise Reduction plugin does a decent job if its just a touch you are after. Anything more and it just blurs the picture beyond use.

Nattress has a few decent noise reducers (Chroma, Spatial, and Temporal,) though I have found they only render properly when timeline renders are set to 8-bit only.

Any of them need to be used sparingly and wont completely remove the noise/grain from a shot. Adding a touch of sharpen helps keep the defining lines in check.

I infer the OP is talking about picture noise.

I should add that that is a fcp7 issue, not an OS or codec issue as it occures on both my leapord based tower and on my snowleapord mbp.
