I got Digital Fusion with my Velocity system and couldn’t quite wrap my noodle around the interface. But that’s what I would consider more of a compositing application. Simply because I’d hate to have to do motion graphics in it 🙂

For broadcast, in a nutshell: You don’t want to use pure black or pure white. You also don’t want to have sharp transitions from black to white, such as sharp white text on black background. Don’t oversaturate your colors, either…heavily saturated colors will bleed. High levels of luminance or chrominance can cause buzzing in the audio of an NTSC signal, I’m not sure if PAL is the same way. And hard edges, especially horizontal ones, are prone to jitter. Same with thin horizontal lines.

I ran into that the other day with a file I’d been working on with a Canopus machine. Its AVI files are interlaced but the animation I’d made was rendered without fields. It looked chunky in AE until I re-interpreted the footage. AE interpreted it properly, since the codec is interlaced. But since this is going to CD-ROM and I didn’t want it to be interlaced I had to override that.

That could be a Windows thing, if someone messes with the users it’ll do weird things to My Documents. That folder’s stored uniquely for each user.
Are you logged in as someone different or some other weird thing? Does someone else have access to your machine to log in/out in Windows?
As cheap as CD-Rs are, I do daily backups on a per-project basis. I can fit a project’s AE files, Premiere files, audio, graphics, and batch lists all on one CD. I just throw the daily backups on a spindle. Cheapest insurance one can have, as I found out last Thanksgiving…motherboard blew a couple of capacitors with three major projects on my system. Agh.

I should have been more specific…don’t turn off OpenGL in your video card settings, but OpenGL previews in After Effects. That could be the source of the problem.

Try turning off OpenGL. That helped with my MX card.

The most profound post I’ve seen in the forums on this issue, as it applies to demo reels, is: “how would you feel if someone took your motion graphics work or demo reel and used it to the tune of their music?”
You’d wanna throw ’em a beating. Music publishers have their lawyers do it for them.
The 30 second thing probably comes from the Fair Use clause of the Copyright Act. That only applies to educators using a piece for instruction. That doesn’t cover any sort of public performance.
