  • Overlay “SAMPLE” over entire video track?

Posted by Clint Fleckenstein on April 26, 2005 at 8:34 pm

I have a client who wants to have some of their DVD burned with “SAMPLE” appearing on the screen throughout the video. I’m an editor; I usually hand my finished work off to someone else for encoding and mastering. This time I’d like to come in early and grab their Mac before business hours, and try this myself.

Can I overlay a graphic over video before encoding/burning the DVD? Is this a silly n00b question?

    Thanks in advance (advTHANKSance)!

If no user of the DVD should be able to remove the “SAMPLE” text, the only safe option is to burn it in the video in the video editing app, before it is handed over to the MPEG encoder. Or you could do the same in Canopus ProCoder (an encoder which offers the option to add a burned-in watermark to the output).

The alternative would be to add the text as a subtitle stream to the DVD, but any determined user will be able to rip the video without the watermark.

Thanks! I kinda had that suspicion, but of course wanted to weasel out of any extra encoding.
