I’ve been working on a project from some time. I’ve been saving versions in folder in “My Documents”on my C drive. I put the project aside, came back and found the folder gone. Not only was in gone but also missing was the folder containing all my Premiere Pro projects.

I got Undelete Pro just in case I might have accidentally deleted them. Undelete couldn’t find any trace of the After Effects projects, and found the deleted Premiere Pro projects all corrupted.

I thought I may have a virus wiping out my project files but a check with the latest defintions revealed nothing. Everything began when I installed the 6.5.1 patch.

My system is a Tyan MPX with Athlon MP 2600’s, Matrox Parhelia Video Card, Raid-0 Media drive, 1GB ram, Windows XP Pro with Service Pack 1.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks for your time,
    James Richards

I don’t have an answer for that. but I’d like to stress that you should backup your aep files
on a different drive. As you get into AE intensly, you will realize how important the aep
files are. They’re like your brain. I have been using AE for 2 years now and I have learned
not make that mistake. Any aep file that is super important, I triple backup on a CD or
    medium other than the computer.

I’ll second that…and third. I also include copies of my projects in most of my rendered movies, which allows me to import the entire project from within rendered .mov files. I find this function especially useful because I do a lot of pre-rendering so I always have copies of my projects at every stage within each pre-render. I don’t have AE open right now and mine opens slowly with so many plugins, but I think the setting is at the top of the Output Module window and is called “post-render options”. Try it…you’ll like it.

That could be a Windows thing, if someone messes with the users it’ll do weird things to My Documents. That folder’s stored uniquely for each user.

Are you logged in as someone different or some other weird thing? Does someone else have access to your machine to log in/out in Windows?

As cheap as CD-Rs are, I do daily backups on a per-project basis. I can fit a project’s AE files, Premiere files, audio, graphics, and batch lists all on one CD. I just throw the daily backups on a spindle. Cheapest insurance one can have, as I found out last Thanksgiving…motherboard blew a couple of capacitors with three major projects on my system. Agh.

It may be just that. I’m the only user so I couldn’t even blame it on anyone.
The backing up lesson is something we must always learn the hard way.

    thanks,
    James
