Sounds to me like you need to do some experimenting first before you handcuff yourself to an entirely different workflow. For instance, some still lenses “breathe” as you run through the range. I just got my 7D (for still photos, imagine that) and haven’t messed around with video too much…but I’ve read a lot and it sounds like it presents its own unique advantages and disadvantages.

Acronym. That Sony explanation beats anything I could come up with on short notice. Part of it is that I’m not sarcastic about these cameras or the workflow, I’m quite satisfied.

You also want to use the Clip Browser to do your copying, because you have the ability to turn on CRC error checking in the application’s preferences. That can help safeguard against corrupted clips.
I have the Calibrated Software codec on one of our machines, it’s great and the price is reasonable.

You are supposed to be using the free Sony Clip Browser. If you’re just extracting the MP4 clips off your card, you are SERIOUSLY breaking your footage.
You must not have Final Cut Studio installed on your MacBook, which means that you can not view the files in Quicktime. You can purchase an MP4 codec from Calibrated Software to do that.
Again, since you’re talking about the MP4s, and have not mentioned either of the free Sony software products, I’m led to believe that you are very dangerously mishandling your footage. You need to stop and learn the workflow properly before you are bitten by this. Read this forum thoroughly, this sort of thing is explained ad nauseam if you scroll down the posts.
Just out of curiosity, just how ARE you “importing the clips?”

I hear ya. I got a couple of MxR readers and some Class 6 cards to play with, but ultimately it’s too much of a gamble. I guess over the years I’ve just come to fear the word “adapter” the same way I get a nervous twitch when someone says “barrel.”
When we got our EX1 and EX3, 16GB cards were $1100 or so. Now we just bought some 32GB cards for $800. We have a bunch of 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB cards in service that have traveled the USA and Canada for up to a year and a half without a single issue. They’re worth the money not “saved” trying to go with SD cards as far as I’m concerned. The nature of what we shoot doesn’t allow for second chances, so why risk losing it for a few hundred dollars?
I’ve seen guys on the forums mildly chide new users for not wanting to spend the money on a full-fledged edit program or upgrade in order to take advantage of XDCAM EX footage, but nobody’s saying the same thing about people willing to roll the dice on SD cards. If a good tripod and good software are part of the cost of doing business with an $8,000 camera, why isn’t robust media?

I guess the first place I’d start with something like that is to re-seat the lens. The lack of a display would indicate to me a possible communication problem between the lens and the camera body.

One other weak point I’ve mentioned before about the EX-1 flip-out LCD is that the screws like to loosen up, and next thing you know you’ve broken an $80 bezel. The replacement screws come with thread locker applied, so somebody at Sony apparently knows about it. The camera doesn’t ship with those screws treated that way.
Now I have to go check our EX3. For local stuff we transport it in a bag not meant for that camera (but it flies in a custom Storm case).
