I actually played with one of these scammers for a while, to the point of receiving a fake cashier’s check. In their case it was not for the full amount, although they said they’d be sending extra.
I had a fun email sparring match with them for a while and when they decided to get threatening, I mentioned that they needed to give me complete FFL information since they were trying to buy some guns that I had listed on a local community buy/sell site, and they wanted me to ship them out of state. After all, I noted, I’m sure they wanted to comply with all applicable federal laws. Never heard a peep from ’em after that.

What Dean said reminded me of something I learned racing motorcycles and mountain biking: your body is a critically important part of your suspension. Just like if you’re standing on a trampoline and someone tries to knock it off, keeping your knees bent can actually keep your feet planted when they absorb the travel of the trampoline.
I often shoot (stills and video) with my knees bent pretty well. It’s like the horse stance in karate that our instructors like to make us stand in for what seems like days at a time…

Thanks, guys. I really appreciate the input. I was expecting to go out today but got bumped (generals take priority I guess) for a few days. I took the opportunity to climb around a Blackhawk this weekend and note places to hook a bungee rig to, then played around with a simple setup in the studio yesterday. That combined with the other advice will likely make this go very smoothly!

I don’t think the FCC has the money or the manpower to even enforce this. A few TV old-timers and I were chatting over burgers this weekend and reminiscing about twenty years ago when the thought of a visit from the FCC was a very real, scary thing 🙂 Of course, we live in a very rural state…but I still don’t think your average guy is going to have even the slightest worry unless someone complains, if then.

By the way, it sounds like “what’s happening” goes something like this:
Step 1: tell the broadcasters they WILL be going digital;
Step 2: force broadcasters into a narrow range of frequencies;
Step 3: force wireless users into that same range;
Step 4: come back around after the DTV transition and demand more bandwidth from broadcasters.I’m glad I’m not in television anymore, and live in a rural state.

I’ve read that the cameras are limited to 29 minute, 59 seconds for the reason you describe…but since the codec they use to record video hits the FAT32 file limit of 4GB at around 12 minutes, that’s the hard limit you hit first.
So we’re both right 🙂

They just opened a new Snow Leopard exhibit here at the zoo in Bismarck. I haven’t tried to shoot ’em with our XDCAM EX gear yet. They have little glass viewing portals out inside the cages, maybe I’ll take an EX1 or EX3 in there and give y’all a report! 🙂 They’ve got a new tiger exhibit next door, but I think that’s been proven to work.

Check your Finder preferences. Sounds like the hardware is working fine, but you can tell Finder what you want and don’t want to appear on your desktop (including drives).

I hit the twelve minute limit too. I believe it’s a FAT32 file size limit.
