I like to remind people of that every now and then 🙂 I think I’m the only geek that cares that a lot of the companies out there have purchased their pro apps instead of designing them from the ground up. I have an original Photoshop 1 on Mac floppy as well as the old Aldus Freehand and Pagemaker. I never did have a copy of CoSA’s After Effects though.

It’s still weird to me when people describe Vegas as a Sony product 🙂 I occasionally fire up my copy of Sonic Foundry’s products (such as Sound Forge) when there’s something I want to do that is best done therein…

If it can wipe out a credit card, there’s always the possibility that it can also damage electronic equipment or media. I think you guys are on the right track with 16mm. I’d leave my cell phone in the car too 🙂
My wife asked me to take a bracelet in for repair last Friday and I put it in my pocket with my cell phone. Later I realized that it connected with a rare earth magnet, and my phone’s display was scrambled. I had to dig into my phone via USB and grab all my vital info and load it into a new phone. Lesson learned.

I hope it’s not inappropriate to post this, since it’s very helpful. I had to replace some parts in our flip-out but not the LCD panel itself. It was far easier to work on than replacing the rear EVF, which I did a couple of weeks ago.
If you do wrangle it yourself, that’s a good time to make sure that all the little screws holding the various pieces of the flip-out unit are tight. If they are not, the bezel can become fatigued and snap inside, giving you a floppy flipper 🙂 That happened to us.

You can use a utility like Pacifist to install only the codecs from your Final Cut Studio install discs. It requires a little bit of nuts-n-bolts knowledge, but it’s very straightforward and will save you a ton of time. I’ve had to perform this in the past.

I know FCP rocks the XDCAM EX codec for editing, but I’ve always kept my render presets set to ProRes. The render times are short. I’m on an 8-core Mac Pro, but we edit this stuff on a MacBook Pro (first Intel edition) on the road without issue.
I use AE all the time and have had no performance problems with XDCAM EX footage. That’s for simple motion, color correction, stabilization, the works. It seems to be pretty efficient.
