So the buyer says:
“Please may I be apologized but my friend can only has money order for $10.000 USA so I would send you that so you would send camera with $5000 Western Union to me. I am living from the Los Angeles California state but am visit my sick mother in Hungary so I send money order from here and you send to me here. I hope you are very understanding of that as I am trust you with $10.000 USA which is more than camera your price.”

Then there’s Craigslist. You just have to make sure they don’t ask you to meet them at their address with the camera.

I think it’s best to sell in an environment with professionals or serious hobbyists.

Ha- that’s funny but I’ve bought & sold on eBay for almost 10 years and never been burned once. You have to use just a little brain power to sniff out the outright scams. If I ever got an email like that and I never have it would go right into the Junk folder…

just received this one, can you believe it? hope nobody is going to fall trough!!!:

“Thanks for your email the content well understood. I am also glad to tell
you that cost is acceptable by us and as such willing to make a deposit
payment of euro 2,000 immediately. The full payment would be made in three
installments to be completed before our arrival. Hope this is ok? Due to
our acceptance and
willingness to have you work for us, I would love to conclude payment with
you.

A single credit card detail would be sent to you when I receive your
confirmatory mail so that you would charge, a part payment of euro 2,000
deposit as agreed/authorized by the group. (NOTE: ALL CHECKS AND BALANCES
WOULD BE MADE WITH YOU BEFORE OUR ARRIVAL) Moreover, I also made an
arrangement with a translator. The translator will take care of all our
logistics to include.

1) Flights
2) International Airport transfer
3)Transportation logistics during our stay. Also, car hiring, other
necessary travel arrangements. The language translator will be able to
translate every language word to some of the group members that English is
not their first language.

I have arranged this with a translator who is willing to undertake these
responsibilities on our behalf. He will be with us throughout the stay with
you. However, since you have credit card machine, I have decided that YOU
will handle the credit card information. Once you receive the credit card
details, you would be authorized to charge a total of euro 9,500, deduct
the deposit of euro 2,000 for your services and send the balance of euro
7,500 to the translator to enable him take care of some of our other travel
logistics and also hire a Costar bus for them to easy our movement on time.

You are advised to charge the credit card because the translator does not
have a credit card charging facility to put through these charge on the
credit card. His account does not support it. Please confirm these
directives and provide me with your details as below:

I actually played with one of these scammers for a while, to the point of receiving a fake cashier’s check. In their case it was not for the full amount, although they said they’d be sending extra.

I had a fun email sparring match with them for a while and when they decided to get threatening, I mentioned that they needed to give me complete FFL information since they were trying to buy some guns that I had listed on a local community buy/sell site, and they wanted me to ship them out of state. After all, I noted, I’m sure they wanted to comply with all applicable federal laws. Never heard a peep from ’em after that.
