I’m left-eyed as well, which makes guns a challenge. I shoot with both eyes open and use scopes with unlimited eye relief.
The nice thing about the EX-3 is 1) you can take the eyepiece off with the flip of a switch, and 2) you can adjust the whole viewfinder out to the left. It has a little lever underneath the microphone. This allows the whole viewfinder/LCD assembly to slide to the left a couple of inches, which makes it acceptable to me for shooting with my left eye.
The rubber piece doesn’t rotate, something I think our Canons did, but I just flip the edge back and it works just fine.
We have an EX-1 and an EX-3 and I use the “big” camera the most when I have to shoot (I’m not our primary guy). I like the ergonomics but I don’t hold it like a full sized shoulder cam very often. Your mileage may vary.
Bottom line in my humble opinion, an this is why we bought an EX-3 instead of second EX-1 is that the eyecup and the BNC connectors for monitoring were a significant enough feature to warrant its purchase. I don’t know what the EX-1R has for monitor out, but that stupid little A/V cable used on the EX-1 (if you don’t have an SDI monitor) should get somebody at Sony fired.

I would just go with an inverter. That’s what I do for my photography stuff. If you plan on drawing a lot of current you’ll need to get one that hooks right to your battery; otherwise, you can run one off the lighter.
This has the benefit of allowing you to use chargers designed for your equipment and batteries. Most third party stuff is just fine, but some isn’t 🙂

Is this your only copy of the footage? So, like if something happened to that external drive you’d be toast?
“Tapeless” workflow has some inherent risks and pitfalls, and I think you’re setting yourself up for some hard lessons. Not understanding your camera and tossing the BPAV folders in favor of a proprietary format is the first step in a long, bumpy road of learning if you don’t get a few fundamentals right first.

Did you find it? Reminder, someone posted here that you have to use the USB port that’s hidden underneath the little cover beside the “other” USB port. Apparently one is for data transfer and one is for maintenance. I haven’t done it myself but it was posted here recently. There’s a little philip-head screw attaching the cover. Apologies if you know this already, just trying to be helpful.

In my limited experience, once a person corrects the Preferences in XDCAM Transfer it should stay that way (and apply to all clips imported with it). She may have to trash her cached files.

Oh, by the way, you can highlight a group of clips in your app and check the channels you want, so it’s really not a huge deal to set your clips back to the way you want them.

I’ve learned that corrupted preferences are a way of life in MacOS. 🙂 It’s amazing the nonsensical hilarity that can ensue on your Mac if this happens.

Did somebody mess around with which channels are monitored in those apps? That happened here once and it made all clips imported after that play without sound until I figured it out. I don’t know how it happened either, because it’s extremely unlikely that someone here messed with that. Check your settings and preferences.
As long as you have “only import monitored channels” or something like that unchecked, the audio will come in just fine even though you can’t hear it in your transfer and browser apps. If that was checked, then you wouldn’t get audio with your imported clips either.

I think I had the same reaction when I first read the original post: “What in the world was the guy doing, playing with just the MP4 files?”
I’m sorry I don’t have a solution other than the people Craig recommended…his suggestions for avoiding this kind of debacle in the future as well.
