We have a Steadicam Merlin vest rig. The EX1 is just barely light enough to work with this system; throwing on a wide angle adapter or other accessory is a no-go. With just the camera, though, we’ve had fantastic results.
A stabilizer suitable for a 7 pound camcorder might not work that great for a DSLR, but if you have a battery grip and some L-series glass on that 5D I would bet you’re getting in a comparable range. One of our part-timers got the T1i when it first came out and ran around with the Merlin for a bit, but he found his camera was too light for the stabilizer to work properly.

Yeah, that’s a goofy thing with FCP…it is possible to reconnect the clips in your bin but have all their instances in the timeline still show up as offline. You might need to reconnect them in both places.

I was looking at the EX30 page on the Sony XDCAM site (link) and saw this text:
“IEEE1394, 6pin (x 1), HDV stream input/output, DVCAM stream output, S400”
Between that and the image of the back panel with the iLink port labeled “HDV/DV” I’m guessing that it’s a video-only port. In that case it might show up to your Mac like a video source, not a storage device. Before investing more time in trying to get iLink to work for data on your machine, you might want to track that down.

I only have the PDW-U1, but I do know that the device doesn’t show up “on the desktop” as a device. Only a mounted volume does. So the Mac acts like it doesn’t have a PDW-U1 connected until I put in a disc. That is, of course, unless I use the included PWD-U1 Utility software. Does the EX-30 come with a similar utility? I only ask this because you haven’t mentioned whether you’ve tried it with any SxS-1 or SxS-Pro cards yet.

Ditto here, I purchased one for each of our cameras. The price is right, the quality is good. We just don’t use them enough to justify the Fujinon wide lens.

How about shooting HDV mode for this? When I think “seminar” I usually run into poor lighting, bland backdrop, typically not the kind of thing that you need top quality for. Obviously you want to deliver the best product possible, but I’m thinking HDV would be capable of delivering just fine and with a lower bitrate.
I haven’t had to do any seminars since we ditched our SD gear, but I’ve already tested our old Firestore with the EX cameras. It’ll accept HDV via Firewire, so I plan to just do that so I don’t have to worry about card capacity.

All those files generated by the XDCAM Transfer application from the raw EX1 files. The Quicktime movies are in an XDCAM codec installed with Final Cut Studio. The XML files are supposed to pass along certain clip format information to Final Cut Pro specifically.
The short answer is that changing anything in the Quicktime files will orphan the XML files, since you’re working outside of XDCAM Transfer. But, since your clips are already in Final Cut Pro, you have another option.
Rename your clips in your Final Cut Pro bin, not in the Finder. Then, with the clips selected, right-click on the clips in the bin and select “Rename>File to Match Clip.” That will rename the files to match the clip name in your project without you having to delete the clips from FCP and re-import.
This will allow Final Cut Pro to preserve any data that came in with the XML files you’re about to orphan when you rename, since the clips aren’t being removed from your FCP project.
The raw files of the XDCAM workflow are a confusing mess when working in the Finder, and for reasons related to our workflow here I’ve never gone about renaming clips using Clip Browser or XDCAM Transfer. If I remember correctly and you wanted to rename clips and export new XMLs with metadata, you’d have to go back a few steps and hope any logging information was intact from the original editor. That’s assuming you have the raw files to work from, which I didn’t see mentioned in your post.
The only downfall to my method of renaming in Final Cut Pro is that the clip names will not translate back to a raw clip somewhere (in a BPAV folder from the camera) but it doesn’t sound like you even have that. If you do, and you want your raw files to relate to the clip names you assign in Final Cut Pro, you’ll want to go back to Clip Browser and do your renaming etc. and then export new movies from XDCAM Transfer.
Since you’re new to XDCAM EX I hope that’s not too confusing. I’d elaborate a little more but I haven’t the time.
