I think most TV news should be thought of as entertainment. The story content is mostly in the audio and there aren’t many words in a 2 minute story. Hurricanes and tornadoes are interesting to look at, but a story on inflation with money being printed? In the SF Bay the local news is mostly crime reporting, yuck. Although the Chronicle has degraded, I still prefer to read the news rather than watch it. Most of the under 30 get their “news” on the internet these days or maybe on the Jon Stewart show.

My new Canon XA20 can shoot in a lot of modes, but all of them are H.264 I think. Either AVCHD or MP4, not much different. Is there a list of FCPX compliant formats? After I wrote the post, I was thinking that FCPX was unwinding the compression done in H.264. In the “old days” with a slower Mac and FCP7, I aways had to convert from H.264 to Pro Res during import, with a big file expansion. I guess with these new formats (24 Mbs, 28 Mbs, 35 Mbs, and 50 Mbs, I am back to a similar process.
One step forward, and a couple of steps back (at least in terms of speed and storage)

I will give it a shot at RAID 0 and find a cheap USB to back it up. Unfortunately my mid 2011 27″ doesn’t support USB3. Apple was a little slow getting around to that. -
I use Superduper and backup only when not running FCPX as above. Then I dismount the backup. May not be the fastest way, but FCPX and I don’t get confused.

I have had the same sort of problem, but never figured it out.

App nap drove me crazy until I disabled it. Even disabling it is done in an less than intuitive way.

I found Time Machine got in the way because I needed all the computing power when I was editing. I use a standalone backup program (Super Duper), but not while editing. On the other hand, I didn’t pursue all the possibilities with Time Machine.

So true, but maybe I don’t care if iTunes decides to take a nap. I guess it is another Mavericks gem.

Thanks, that is very helpful. I can’t believe where Apple hid App Nap, which I had never heard of. Amazing it is not available from FCPX, but through the finder. Live and learn and then forget again.

No. I only use Superduper at the end of a session. So I am not backing up continuously.
