November 11, 2013 at 5:10 pm in reply to: backing up fcpx with time machine versa duplicating projects.I don’t trust Time Machine when working on video. It seems to get in the way and slow things down. I use Superduper and back up to a disk that is normally offline to not confuse FCPX. For final archiving, the Mac Break Studio guys seem to have it well laid out. They really do a good job explaining how the rendered stuff make the project files huge.

By putting the “private” avchd file in its own folder without any other files, FCPX does see it and opens it just fine. So I just need to put it in its own folder as suggested above. Thanks.

OK now I am concerned and confused. I recently upgraded to a Canon XA20 from an XA10. Now AVCHD files are stored on the card as “private”. These import from the card into FCPX fine. However as a backup, I drag the entire “private card” onto another disk. Tonight, I tried to import the data from that with FCPX, it doesn’t show the clips, although it knows they are there because is says there are 80 clips. It does see some MVI files that were recorded directly as MP4 file by the XA20. The first time I took files from the card in the same way, those are all showing.
With the XA10 files done the same way (they weren’t labelled private) are all available for import by FCPX.
Any thoughts?

I think you are right. By copying the render files over several projects, they seem to grow geometrically. I duplicated a project without copying the render files and they dropped from 14 GB to 4 GB when I rerendered in the new version. The render time was reasonable at well. So I will only copy the render files when duplicating it there is a huge time pressure.

I will be interested in the drive comments. My 2 GB Seagate FW 800 which has my FCPX events and projects on it is filling up. FW800 seems to be a dying standard with Thunderbolt and USB3 around. The LaCie Thunderbolt drives get great reviews, but are rather pricy compared with USB3. I use a mid 2011 27 inch iMac with 16 GB of ram and a 3.1 GHz I5 (I should have bought the I7). I am editing files from a Canon XA20 and using what they call 1080 p 59.94 which at 29 Mbs.

What is the best way to export a clip like this and then reinsert it into the project, to save the frequent re-rendering during the editing stage?

What about using the Apple Magic Track pad? I use it for everything as a replacement for a mouse. Should be easy on your shoulder.

Good point on the Youtube police these days. I guess I will test post the video to see if it passes through their filters. I have found it to be very unpredictable.
As far a cheesy sounding goes, I would love to use iTunes music but trying to get a release for most music is beyond me. I will look at some of the sites suggested for purchasing music. I haven’t found music that really works so well.

Thanks, that’s very helpful. It is sometimes hard to track down music rights.

That is interesting because some of the cross dissolves I have used in FCPX seem to almost flash back and forth between the two. I never researched it to see if it depends on the speed of the transition or something else. Anyway, it was an unpleasant result. Are there some good workarounds or other approaches if you don’t like the supplied transition?
