To answer my own question, I just trashed FCPX and Compressor and downloaded them from the APP store. That was all that was needed to get the current versions.

I just upgraded to Monterey from Mohave and have FCP 10.4.10 installed. Since I am making changes, I tried to upgrade to FCP 10.6. The APP store says all my Apps are current and I can’t seem to find anyway to get it to update. On the other hand 10.4.10 seems to run. Should I pursue this farther, or stay with 10.4.10 for a while? I am between projects, so I thought it was time to finally go full 64 bit.

Should I stay or should I go??

I’m about to start a new FCPX project that will take about 1 month. I want to stay with Mojave for that time because I have some apps that will need to be replaced, when I go to Catalina. Should I stick with my existing FCPX version or go for the update before doing the new project??

  • I was using FCPX recently to transfer some mini-DV files and the results were not great. Sometimes the transferred files were OK, sometimes there were lines. Also, it tended to break the video into clips somewhat randomly. Rewinding the tape sometimes made it work.
Some of the mini DV tapes were originally made by ingesting 8 mm analog into a miniDV camera, which I still have. I bought a Elanto digitizer and used it on the 8 mm analog directly and that was easier and better since it converted directly to an MP4 format.
Of course with the mini DV files, they may of been the problem or the firewire link. This process was good enough for home movies, but nothing more demanding.

Big loses for me will be MS Office program (2011 version), which I only use occasionally, but have a lot of old documents. I guess I will have to see how much I can use the simple mac apps of numbers, pages and keynote, sign up for the new MS Office or wait until I really need Catalina.

When I looked at it a month ago, they were listing Photoshop and Lightroom (not Lightroom Classic) for $10/month and anything with Classic in it at $20/month. What they called Lightroom seemed to be a dumbed down version for phones and iPads. It was very confusing. Fortunately I own Lightroom 6 and was eventually able to upgrade to 6.14. Sometime soon they will figure out a way to kill that. I love Lightroom Classic, but would hate spending $20 of month to rent it.

That was amazing to see all of the different step and techniques rolled into one video. There were a number of things that I have never used, perhaps because I have learned to edit in FCPX by trial and error, by watching tutorials ect, but never through a logical class or course. Watching him use the keyer to replace the sky was a highlight for me.

    Thanks for the link, Oliver.

  • Oliver:
Thanks for the info. Just for a test I used my current setup Mojave 10.14.2 and FCPX 10.4.5 and my old Sony HDV 1080i Camcorder and used FCPX to reimport some footage from 2006. The Quicktime inspector opens the imported files (.mov) and lists them as Mpeg-2 1440-1080 at 29.97 fps. FCPX imported it without a hitch, recognized the camera, and was able to edit the files. The warning about codecs did not appear.

So, the hardest part was to find a way to cable from the oldest firewire to a USB-c port.

At least for the near term, I will leave by old 27 inch in the closet with an old system on it. The rest is too complicated to worry about.

  • Not trying to revive a zombie thread but—I got a request from a client for some work I did in 2013, which would need modification. After some searching, I found the library and files, FCPX gave me the warning about antiquated codecs, brought the library up to date and the project opened and everything was there. If the future versions won’t read these codecs, it would be a big effort to convert things, probably all the links would die and it would be a mess.

Maybe I have to keep that old 27 inch Mac in closet for this. Converting everything to xml and redoing old original files into Prores for this possibility isn’t really practical.

Has Apple told us what will and what won’t work or when this will take place or give warning not to go to the next operating system. In spite of Bill Davis’s proclamations, this is not a good thing. Just sayin’.

  • Apple recommends making a master file, when a project is complete, especially if it used formats that won’t be supported in future versions of FCPX. As I understand a master file is typically an uncompressed 422 output version of the project and it can be edited by loading it into a new project. This doesn’t address the issue of media not in the master file that remains in an obsolete format. So adding that media later by further editing will still be problematic.
    Do I have that right?
I would guess there might be other third party programs developed that could convert the obsolete files into a usable format for FCPX.
