With my Canon XF400 I now have the option to record in XF-AVC at 4k 160 Mbs in addition to the existing MP4 4K at 150 Mps option. I know AVC files carry more meta data, but is there any other advantage? FCPX seems to work fine with either one.

November 9, 2018 at 6:15 pm in reply to: todays politics and AVID/FCP/FCPX/Davinci/Premiere/Vegas and the name change of this forumI fear changing the name from Debate. I agree with Bob, let’s keep the debate going. I have learned a lot about how editors think, feel and work from these free ranging “debates”. I would be sad to see it fade away. The debates here are generally civil and mostly fun. I guess that make me a fan boi of this forum, blog or whatever it is.

September 8, 2018 at 4:22 am in reply to: cannot share from FCPX 10.4 to Youtube anymoreCan you use compressor to make it something web ready and then just upload to Youtube. I always find this more reliable than trying to share directly to Youtube or Vimeo.

I am surprised at 41 kHz from the zoom. I thought the two standards were 48 kHz for voice over and 44 for music such as CD’s. 24 bit 48 kHz seems to be the most common for good quality audio for video.

The Art Doesn’t Pay is an incredible reel. I have read all the arguments in this thread about film school, formal training, learning on the set. I went the formal route, through grad school in Physics at Stanford and then a career in Accelerator Physics. That is essential in a field like physics. Late in life I became interested in film and video. Just Youtube Channel stuff, but as I phased out of physics, I looked for a way to improve my production values. I took a number of courses in video, lighting, documentary at our local Community College, Berkeley City College. I was always the oldest in the class. The teachers work in the industry not necessarily feature films, but Reality TV, Documentary, Corporate, etc. The tuition for a course is not in the thousands, typically it is about $150, per course. The learning is hands on and can provide a solid background for someone with the artistic talent, drive and entreprenurial spirit to succeed. One thing the teachers there stress, is it is not about a degree in film making, it is who your work with, how hard and well you work and how challenging a profession it is.
So if my kid wanted to work in the industry, rather than spend $40 k on film school (exception for AFI), I would suggest the above approach and maybe buy him a fancy camera with the money saved. It is a risky business for sure.

I just bought an iRig Duo to digitize the output of my Rode NTG4+ mic for voice over recording in FCPX. The iRig arrives tomorrow. Should make for high quality voice over, except for the talent (me). Before this I was using a Blue Snowball that does a good job of the whole process and can be had for about $70. But I wanted the higher quality of the Rode shotgun.

An less than elegant solution, would be to record your voice over onto the Canon just as another video. Then import it and detach the audio, place it in the timeline in need of the voice over. I sometimes record to a H4n Zoom and the place each voice over segment into the video, about the same process.

Thanks for all the suggestions. In the end I went for an iRig Pro Duo (not exactly the cheap option at $169) but it is supposed to have really good pre amps and isn’t much more than the iRig Pro single channel. It is compact and portable, if I ever need that. It also can work with an iPhone, if I ever need that. I tested my Rode NTG4+ with my older H4n Zoom and that worked, because the mic output is high enough to get over the lousy pre amps, but I want to go straight into FXPX and not be flipping sd cards in and out. The iRig comes in some days.

July 5, 2018 at 11:58 pm in reply to: Today we celebrate Drop Frame Timecode in the U.S.A.As I remember the US went metric in the late 70’s. Just didn’t stick. In physics, we have been metric for a century or so. I think cars are almost completely metric at this point, except for the PSI of the tires, the mph on the speedometer. The Bolt reads out in miles/kiloWatt hr, that is not such a great unit, half metric and half English. Better than furlongs/fortnight. But I agree the NTSC issue is an irritation. I can think of some bigger issues facing the U.S at the moment though.

Magnetic timeline #2?? What’s that? Not the dreaded tracks!
