That was fun to watch, but only 3 hours to do all the research he described? Obviously, he is no amateur. I still remember when Apple allowed another company to make boxes. Jobs shut that down as soon as he returned. Most people know Apple uses high gross profit margins on hardware, so it is no surprise their computers cost much more than the sum of their parts.

So it is fun to fantasize about, but I will spend my time trying to do editing and hope every 5 or 6 years I can buy an new machine and not be bankrupted.

8 GB of RAM is very marginal and it certainly can cause FCPX to grind to a crawl. Once the RAM fills up in a project, the memory swapping with the disk is really slow. Short of adding more memory, make sure no other programs are loaded. Before I got 40 GB of RAM, I would have to close FCPX before using compressor.

It is actually a hardware issue and the Blue Snowball website just says mine is obsolete. Fortunately they are only $70.00 and the new versions work.

This apparently is a software bug that relates to the Blue Snowball USB mic and maybe the Blue Yeti, FCPX 10.4.1 and High Sierra. Irritating since I have used FCPX and the Blue Snowball through many iterations of OSX and FCPX. I searched the web and Youtube and some similar issues are noted, but no solutions found. Looks like Apple made it work in Garageband but not FCPX.

I guess my short term work around will be to record the voice over segments in Garageband and then paste them into FCPX.

That was really interesting. It not only covered FCPX editing, but some larger issues and techniques to find the story, while editing.

“The music video of “Despacito,” the second biggest hit in history, was edited using Final Cut Pro X.”
That is like saying the Mona Lisa was painted with a brush.

Andreas, thanks. I will give it a shot after I finish my current project.

  • Thanks Jeff. I would not have guessed that it would use the proxy, instead of original. At some point, I will see if I can verify that experimentally. I am guessing the compressor will require more time if it is using the original 4k vs the proxy files.

There is a cost in time and effort to deal with Windows vs buying more expensive hardware from Apple. None of this is new. I would rather spend my limited brain cells on editing than operating systems.
