I am not sure I understand how it works when you crop 1080 and still can get the pixel density when it is scaled down to 720. What are the steps. If you import 1080 into a 720 time line, then crop, haven’t the pixels already disappeared? So what is the work flow for this technique?

The tutorial on secondary story lines is really helpful. So much stuff buried in FCPX and things yet to learn.

I use it all of time since it is easy to use whatever setting you want. About the only difference is the result ends up in my movie file, not in the project “share” file. Anyway seems stable and reliable to me.

Thanks for all the great information. I am deep into the FCPX audio compressor add on.

Thanks for the comment. I definitely fit the “I do everything myself.” At least the project I am working on has no deadline, so I can use some time to come up to speed on the audio-mastering portion. The audio in the project is important because it features a restored 65 Mustang, which sounds great now after the new owner injected $30k into it.

Last time I checked, Vimeo limited upload data rates to 5000 kBits/second. I generally choose 720 p H.264. I am not sure going to 1080p at such low data rates makes much sense. In any case I think they and Youtube limit their download rates so that too much data just leads to stopping and starting and loss of viewers.

The longest video I have seen on Vimeo was the Filmumentary Inside Jaws that ran 2 hours 29 minutes.

I usually use compressor but I tried the share to Youtube approach. The video came out with these settings.
    HD 720p.mov
    H.264, 1,280 x 720 (1,248 x 720)
    Audoe AAC, 48000 Hz, Stereo (L R
    Data Rate 10.34 Mbit/s
    29.97 FPS

Note, the raw video was 1080i AVCHD. Of course the quicktime inspector does not show all the setting such as fast start for the internet.

  • Very useful tip. As long as I have used FCPX, there always seem to be tricks that I have missed.

You can set it up so it will save both events and projects to an external hard drive. In my case it saves both to the same external drive, I then back that up as needed. I think you need to set up the preferences correctly so it will store the projects where you want them.

If you use the share settings for a Vimeo Upload in FCPX, does it make a quicktime file and if so what are the settings? I tried to find yours (Bill Davis) on Vimeo to see, but couldn’t find it. I usually use 1280 by 720 p with a bit rate limit of 5 Mbits/second for Vimeo. I generate that in compressor and then upload. Maybe there is a better way.
