September 28, 2005 at 8:43 pm in reply to: Help… Cant install FCP 4.5 after deleting FCP 5…

You can’t just delete the FCP application. There are many other files that went with it, like Application Support files, Receipts, etc. that are scattered about in various directories. You might consider creating a separate boot drive with other FCP version on it.

Here is text of a support doc no longer on the apple site, that pertains to uninstalling FCP HD 4.5, but might be of use (at your own risk).

September 28, 2005 at 7:55 pm in reply to: NTSC Broadcast legal video

    Simple explanation:

Whites too high= highlights burn out or smear, Buzz in audio at home.
Blacks too low= picture looks dark and muddy
Chroma too high= picture looks like grandma’s old Zenith, people glow in the dark.
Chroma too low= picture looks as if done in color pencil
Any or all of the above= station or network will reject content on technical grounds

Simple solutions= get scopes and learn to read them. Get a professional video monitor.
Anyone claiming to be doing “professional” production of content for broadcast has no excuse
for not learning the most basic technical aspects of their tools. If the content looks like crap, the message is lost.

September 23, 2005 at 3:13 am in reply to: Buying new laptop. What’s the best?

[scotty] “I’m looking to buy a new laptop, possibly a G5…”
No such thing. Never will be.
Apple.com or your local Apple Store will show you the line of G4 Powerbooks now available. Rumors always abounding about updates to the current G4 Powerbook line between now and next year when the Intel based product comes out.
Go for top shelf video card, and load it up with as many GB RAM (from crucial.com and others. Much less $ than Apple-installed RAM) as you can fit in.

There are numerous tools in the Xcode developer package. If you don’t have a disk or an installer called Developer Tools.
If not, it is available for download (751MB) at the Apple Developer site. Registration (no charge) is required for the Developer site and Xcode tools page. The installer creates a “Developer” folder on your drive.

September 15, 2005 at 1:42 am in reply to: Countdown before commercial

I’ve never done a spot, local or national, that did not have a countdown. The ad agency clients expect it as part of the finished delivered spot. More importantly, as mentioned earlier, the countdown nowadays serves mainly as a background for the slate, which identifies and verifies the content to follow by Agency, Title, Production or air date, Length and ISCI Code. The station and network traffic and sales departments do like to have that information tied to the spot to make sure what’s on that tape is what the label says it is.

And, how many commercial editors out there have experienced the hell of having an agency producer or art director insist on critiqueing the kerning and typeface on your counddown slates??

    September 8, 2005 at 5:27 pm in reply to: Plug-ins won’t load.

I had a set of copied-over Generators and effects plugs that would not show up in the application. I ended up (per advice read on this forum, I believe) doing a “Get Info” on each one, and making sure that permissions were set to “Read and Write.” Once that was done, they magically appeared.

I have a related question, at least pertaining to FCP HD (4.5)-
It appears that there are at least two locations where PlugIns can be located. One is in the customary /Library/Application Support/Final Cut Pro System Support folder, but there is also a “Plugins” folder in the FCP HD application bundle. Get Info, Show Package Contents, Contents, reveals a buried Plugins folder. I did try moving or copying a few from the former location to this one, and they showed up and worked normally. When the plugs are within the application bundle’s Plugins folder, they show up handily listed in a PlugIns pane in the Get Info window for the FCP app, which can be handy to inventory what’s available and installed.

September 6, 2005 at 6:05 pm in reply to: Newbie Question – What kind of video jack is this?

Just to nit-pick, the socket connector pictured is an SO-239. The PL259 is the mating plug.
RadioShack will probably only have “GOLD” adaptors that cost three times as much as plain metal.

This question was asked and answered in this forum a couple of weeks ago. The “Search” feature on the COW is your friend.
My answer to the earlier post as follows:

A few seconds’ search at http://www.apple.com/support/itunes yields up this handy document:

iTunes 4: ‘Movie file cannot be found’ error message

what are the file extensions of the AAC files, m4a or m4p? If m4p, they are DRM”d. You would have to try one of the solutions suggested in the earlier post.
