If you have set up multiple desktops or “Spaces” or, multiple displays, System Prefs might have been last opened in one of those environments, and it may not be visible unless you have all monitors up or can select which desktop / Space to view (CTL-right arrow/left arrow).

In the Dock, right-click (CTL-click) the System Prefs icon, in OPTIONS> see that either “This Desktop or “None” is selected.

Besides the obvious check for 32-bit applications, there are codecs and plug-ins in 32-bit code that will also no longer function with Catalina and beyond.
Another good utility to check compatibility is 32 Bit Check from Howard Oakley’s terrific Eclectic Light Company site,

Explore the site for many informative Mac-related articles, and dozens of very useful utility programs.

I don’t understand what you mean by “search engine mac.” Please explain.

  • Left field guess, maybe your Quicktime codecs, used by FCP, got hosed.

  • Haven’t had hands on a Beta deck for years, so kind of just guessing here. Looks like it’s expecting external reference. Either connect a sync/blackburst generator or find the menu setting for “internal” reference. Could also be that it’s in an Edit mode.

  • Totally dependent on what the station is capable of handling, or is willing to handle. One that I work for still receives some paid program material on DVCProHD, though this is quickly dwindling. One local producer would bring a KiPro drive for playback ingest into our server.

  • By “iTunes videos” do you mean music videos purchased from the iTunes Store? How are you getting to the video files? What is the “it” that is telling you the file is corrupted? If you select a video from the iTunes library list, right click and select “Show in Finder” which will reveal it inside its folder in iTunes Media. Note the file type suffix. It is probably .m4v indicating a protected file. Protected videos can only be played within iTunes or by QuickTime Player. So not able to import or use in another program.

  • You’ll do OK with that attitude and enthusiasm. Good Luck!

An operator manual for almost any switcher, if you can borrow or download one, can be useful. Best would be to find someone doing the job and see if you can “shadow” him/her for a time. A manual or text will tell you what a particular unit does, and explain its basic operations, but can’t teach you how to deal with situational issues and real-time problem spotting and solving. You’ll also find that directors have their own jargon and styles. It’s necessary to learn how a each director you work with will call a show. Is a lower third a “super” or a “key” is a graphic a “chyron” or an “aston.” Is he/she a “finger snapper”? Calm and deliberate or a frenetic “yeller?” Your crew will also look to you for necessary check out of things like tallys and intercom, and to communicate their tech issues to your engineer.
The job does go way beyond just knowing what buttons to push. Some “101” is great for starters, but skills are developed by being in the “hot seat.”

It’ s important that you do learn and understand that “technical jargon” you refer to. A good TD/Vision Mixer needs to properly communicate any technical issues (problems with cameras, video, comms, playbacks/records, etc.) to the director and to the EIC, and often will need to be doing real time problem solving while still switching a show.
