Actually you repair files in the FS-100 menu, there is no way to do it in the camera.
If you use the FS-100 often (or even one more time!), you should really shoot in the Quicktime mode, not the P2 mode as no “log and capture” conversion of any kind is needed by FCP. The quality is identical and the workflow painless. You just drag and drop the files right into your logging bin or timeline.
And the FS-100 workflow is VERY reliable. I have been using it exclusively with the HVX-200 for several years now without even a dropped frame. Yes they just came out with this plug-in and it works very well. And you sure can’t beat the price!

I have several clients who insist on always shooting their own footage on the new cheaper HDV cameras. They have never considered using anything but the camera mike, never white balance, have horrible “queezecam” zooming, panning and hand-held footage, and have no idea how to properly compose or frame shots. One woman actually shot an entire documentary, continually cutting off the head of everyone she was interviewing, (usually below the eyebrow even in fully wide-angle shots!). She entered her film in several film festivals and has even had the film play in Nashville with Al Gore’s film at a “green event” (due to the subject matter no doubt). I spent over a month posting her project, trying to fix the bad audio, color correcting every shot, using the image stabilizer on any shots that weren’t too shaky for even that remedy, but unfortunately I didn’t have a plug-in or filter for the “chopped forehead” syndrome. I still cringe when I see the film, but she is extremely happy with it and even touts her skills as a “cinematographer.” She would be very offended if I told her that her footage wasn’t up to professional standards. I can honestly say that 75% of the footage I see in post is not up to the standards I set for myself when I am fortunate to be a DP on the project as well. The bottom line is to make whatever footage you receive look as good as you possibly can.

That is the problem with a lot of my larger corporate clients as well. They can’t grasp anything about a visual project or ad campaign(with or without treatment/storyboard), they don’t know anything about the process of shooting and editing, usually have a company “media” guy who is even more clueless (and self important/absorbed) than the project “director,” can’t tell the difference between a rough cut or polished finished piece (even though they have been told many times that the final color correction, music choice, VO talent, special FX, etc. are all to be added after a general consensus is reached by all on at least the rough cut), and no one wants to take the blame when the “real” boss sees the “finished product” and doesn’t like it. More and more I have to just take the project and take my best intuitive shot as to what image and message the company wants to convey, go ahead and polish the piece up as much as possible with my own vision (despite what the “art director” tells me), and then show that to the company. Fortunately that has worked in 95% of all my corporate projects over the last few years. No one wants to be in the edit suite anymore. They all want a finished, polished piece that they don’t have to think about or sweat over, and then they will all try to take the creative credit for it if the boss likes it! This seems to be the conundrum of modern posting!

This “survey” could also portend something quite the opposite. Discreet (Autodesk) used this same questionnaire format to gauge user opinion right before it EOL’d edit*, and right before the final whimper of an upgrade to Combustion 2008 (I’m sure Cs final release). They added a single high end tool from the Smoke/inferno line (Color Warper) and that was all she wrote. It really will be interesting to see what this new economy ends up killing (and birthing) indeed. Promax going under isn’t a good sign, and I’m afraid is a good barometer of what is to come.

I too have vowed that the RED is the last camera I will ever BUY!! The Scarlet unveiling was definitely one of the highlights of NAB this year. RED is the new paradigm shift, as I have stated before! It is also good that you were allowed to expound on this subject in a forum other than the RED forum. I tried to start this same type of RED thread in the Panasonic forum awhile back and was shot down and “warned” by Ron for being a troll, fanboy etc. when all that was wanted was an intelligent and vibrant discussion of cutting edge technology, as this thread so aptly reflects. Good work! I guess it helps being a forum leader when posting content! I also think NAB was far better this year than any I have attended in the past. Apple and Avid were not even missed in the least…..

As painful as it sounds, I would probably convert all your footage to TGA image sequences and then import those into Edit*. Almost any graphics program will do this for you, and I remember Edit* played extremely well with the TGA format. You really can’t expect these companies to try to help you out with an SD editing program that has been EOLed for over 6 years now! Adobe Premiere just got P2 support less than 6 months ago!!
