February 8, 2009 at 9:04 pm in reply to: Vegas 8 pro crashing after “Querying additional plug-in interfaces” stage during loadingI had this exact thing happen to me today after installing the Excalibur plug-ins. I actually opened up all my other Sony programs (DVD Studio, Sound Forge, Acid Pro) first, and then tried opening Vegas 8 after that. It loaded fine twice after I initialized registration on the Excalibur plugs. Hopefully that is the last I will see of this behavior.

I have also found that FCP likes PNG sequences better than Targas.

I have indeed found that there are some codec problems that are causing sync issues in FCP 6.05 when working with DV footage. I was able to use PPro CS4 for the projects with the miniDV footage with no issues at all however.

February 5, 2009 at 2:04 am in reply to: Undo 10 steps 50 steps back? Work-around?Yes, Discreet edit* had an undo history LIST, for the entire project, so you could go back to any part of your project, as many or few steps as you wanted, with ease. I still really miss that feature!

I’m with Steve on this one. With Discreet edit* you could do rock-solid slomo (or speed up a clip) at any rate (including to the decimal level) and it didn’t displace the clip in the timeline and/or look like garbage. It was one mouse click WITHIN the clip, WITHIN the timeline, no rendering, and you were done. I can also attest that CS4 PPro does a very acceptable job of performing speed changes now using the same paradigm. Everything else is a time consuming work around. Of course you can go out to Boris Red, After Effects, Combustion, Motion etc. to get great looking slo mo, but that is missing the entire point. Like having a really good Title program within FCP (which CS4 also now has), the speed change implementation in FCP has always sucked.

While I totally and completely fall on the side of Chris Blair’s explanation of the right and reasons to own your footage, especially if you put it in your contract, and the issue of unscrupulous clients that don’t want to pay you (as the only ones I have had an issue with concerning the same), I think my problems with the original poster come down to this:
We finally agreed on a 1 month drop-dead timeframe to deliver the 3 minute version to them
If you really give your clients this long of a finish time for a 3 minute cut, I would indeed at least hire someone yourself to cut the spot for them. This is indeed “holding the footage Hostage.”
And I wish Walter would quit framing his views on this issue as one of “ethical practices.” It is his opinion which he espouses and is entitled to, nothing more nothing less. It has nothing to do with ethics.Dual 2.5 G5, IO, Kona LH, IO, Medea Raid, UL4D, NVidia 6800, 4Gig RAM

January 27, 2009 at 1:35 am in reply to: Equipment overkill (hvx200, Fs-100, and bears, oh my!)Bill,
I already answered this for you in the Firestore forum, but the FS-100 indeed can do 1080i in the Quicktime mode (though NOT The Quicktime Pn mode). The main thing you need to know is that the FS-100 only shoots one format per session, in other words you can’t mix formats on the same shoot. From a lot of your other posts in the FireStore forum it is also very obvious you didn’t read the manual. It is a very short read, and I recommend it, as all of your questions would have been addressed there.

January 27, 2009 at 1:20 am in reply to: Best HD camera for FCP. Stable capturing and editing.Actually you can get a 16GB SDHC card for the Panasonic HMC150 that will record 1.5 hours of HD content with the least amount of compression. I would suggest that camera for your budget. The picture quality is very good.

Just curious, did this footage come from a DV tape??
I think the DV codec in FCP is having quite a few issues right now.Dual 2.5 G5, IO, Kona LH, IO, Medea Raid, UL4D, NVidia 6800, 4Gig RAM
